.308 Experts -- Proper C.O.L. for Semi-auto?????????
« on: October 29, 2006, 11:04:10 AM »
I shoot a Remmy 750 in .308 and have been trying to reload for it. The C.O.L. ranges from 2.725 up to 2.875. Factory fodder comes in at 2.700 inches. I have been having jamming problems with my reloads which have a C.O.L. of 2.810 inches. Can someone please tell me the correct C.O.L. for a semi auto?

Thanks

It varies with the particular bullet you are loading due to the shape of the ogive.  Best bet is to check with the folks that make the bullet you are trying to load.  Another option exists if you know for sure what bullet is used on your commercial loads, then load to that length.

semi auto huh! normally it is what fits the magazine.and feeds properly from it.You normally can get the COL just shy of OAL of the internal dimensions of the magazine.
then there are bullet weights.each normally will have a differnt seating depth also.and I believe all manufactors make them to fit mags.
I am no expert,, but have thoughts hope they help..
my huntin rifle is safe from confiscation only while my battle rifle protects it.

There is PLENTY of room in the mag for much longer C.O.L. than that mentioned as it is designed to be used for several different cartridges. The concern I have primarily has to do with the C.O.L. that best cycles thru my rifle but just using the shortest bullet doesn't make sense to me. For one thing it is a longer jump to the rifling which is an accuracy issue. For another the cartridge stack in the mag would seem to be more stable if the rounds are longer almost the full mag length.  So I am' betwixt and between' shorter or longer. Ironing the issue out by trial and error would I think be a ponderous task. I am hoping that someone else has run into this reloading for the Remmy 750 and has the 'magic' answer. Thanks for the responses so far!!!
