winchester lever action shotgun
« on: November 10, 2006, 06:57:18 PM »
I have a lever action 12 ga shotgun with the patent dates of Feb.16 & July 20 1886 stamped on it.
Does that make it a model 1887? The barrel is somewhat pitted but overall the firearm seems to be in good condition. Is it safe to shoot and if so would I want to buy black powder shot shells for it?

Thanks in advance
Terry

A gunsmith would have to physically inspect the gun to tell you if it was safe to shoot. I would guess you would need black powder 12 gauge ammo for it. Magtec makes brass 12 gauge hulls that reload well with black powder and very little in the way of tools. Circle fly wads would be a good choice, BP melts plastic wads and hulls.
If God wanted plastic stocks he would have made plastic trees.
