Next rifle...
« on: November 27, 2006, 04:29:01 AM »
I've begun doing some research into my next rifle that I said I would never buy.  I plan to get whatever model in 30.06 Sprg caliber.  This way I can leave my 7600 30.06 topless and have a bolt action with glass in the same caliber, thus keeping the ammo organized to just two different sizes (30.06 Sprg and .338RUM).

I was looking at the SPS, and a few others.  I would like to stay in the Remington 700 family, while finding something that is out-of-the-box accurate and sub-$500 for the rifle (I don't think I would be able to justify another $1250 for a rifle+scope+rings/mounts+sling+etc. as I did get a bit of a chewing after my XCR purchase).

I plan on using the .338RUM for deer this season.

I guess what I'm asking is:  For the money ($500 or less) show me a good bolt action rifle, in 30.06 Sprg, black stock, stainless barrel, shoots great with no tweaking, please. :D

Remington 700XCR - .338RUM, Burris Fullfield II 3-9x/40, Burris Dovetail rings and base mounts.

SigPro 2022 - .40S&W
Glock 26 O.D.

Looks like you pretty well described the Savage. You will have to develop a load or try different commercial loads until you find the one your particular rifle likes.

I would like to stay with Remington.  But I guess I would consider other manufacturers if the price is right.  I'd should say that I'd also be willing to step over the $500 line by a step to stick with Remington.

I was browsing the SavageArms website and the 116FHSS.  Anyone know in-store pricing for that model?

I have decided to include a choice of a different caliber too.  Possibly 7mm RM.

And if that is going to be the case then I might wait and save the money and buy me a Sendero.

You should be able to find a 700 BDL SS model around.  Not sure how much the street price is on them, tho.

My local gunshop quoted me $540 for the short action 16FHSS by savage.  I don't know if that is good or bad as I haven't shopped around yet.
