Suggestions for a 22 semi-auto/scope combo.

Hey Guys,
     My eyes aren't what they used to be.  I want a semi-auto 22 handgun with some type of optical sight.  What are your thoughts on a pistol?  I have looked at Rugers, Berettas, and Brownings.  I already have two Single Sixes, a Diamondback, a Kimber rimfire, and a Walther PP.  I thought about putting a scope on one of the Rugers but I want a semi-auto.
    Next question is what type of sight?....Red-dot, Reflex, or a true scope?  I have several Contender barrels with scopes but I am open to something else.

I really like my red dots on my auto pistols...they seems to work well with "older eyes".  Give one a try.

The Ruger MK III makes sense. The base can be used with iron sights, or a scope can be mounted.

I have a S&W 41 with 2 barrels. A heavy 5 1/2" barrel with a Weaver base and a 5" light barrel. I use the light barrel with iron sights, and have a 2x Weaver in Warne QD mounts and a red dot scope for the heavy barrrel. I can use iron sights with either barrel, but a scope is fun, too.

I went to my gun dealer yesterday afternoon and looked at pistols.  I have decided on a Sig Trailside.  It has a 3/8 dovetail groove on it allowing the use of 22 rings.  Trying to find one with adjustable sights but he had one in stock with the fixed sights.  Since I am planning on an optical sight of some kind, it probably won't matter.

I have the S&W 22A which comes with a Weaver style mount base factory installed. I mounted a Dr. Optic holographic dot sight. It weighs only a couple of ounces, has unlimited eye relief and unlimited field of view. Looking through the single lens I can still see the factory front sight and use that as a pointing aid to get lined up on target, then use the 7moa red dot for actual aiming. Mine is mounted over the original rear sight location and it is scarcely larger than the adjustable open rear, but I get much better groups with the dot than I ever could with open sights. I recently saw that Burris is now making such a sight at a reasonable price and that would be my first choice for a handgun sight. I've used scopes of 1 1/2X, 2X, 2 1/2X and 3X and while they are very accurate a scoped handgun is just not a handgun at all, quick point shooting is out of the question and they require a very bulky holster, not to mention the added weight. Red dot sights are the same, often even bulkier, but that small holographic sight adds almost nothing but accuracy. With the sight mounted over the rear sight location it will still fit many holsters without modification. ;D

My Mk.II slabside and Ultra Dot Match Dot combo is one accurate sucker and an absolute joy to shoot. In fact just yesterday it out shot several other 22s of various makes in 2 handed 25 yard and bullseye shooting. Details and pics at http://www.bghi.us/index.php?x=678gc . Its got to be my most favorite handgun to shoot.

The Ultra Dot is one heck of a good sight. It also comes loaded with everything you need except for the scope base. Designed for competition shooters by Camp Perry shooters, it features four dot sizes - 2,4,6 and 8 MOA and a 30mm diameter tube. Click adjustable brightness control. Available only in a Black/Silver matte finish. The MatchDot comes with lens covers, extension tube, polarizing filter, rings, allen wrench and battery. I bought mine from Larry's Guns in Maine. Lifetime warranty. Great service too and he is an authorized repair agent, not that you will ever need it. Believe me the polarizing filter alone is worth its weight in gold as far as I am concerned.

You get what you pay for. I have a 1" Ultra Dot on my 44 mag also for deer hunting and it has stood up to max loads with no problems at all. Pic is at http://www.bghi.us/index.php?x=44ss6 . Although I did add more robust rings on the 44.

Dang I sound like an advertisement, but I just like these sights so much.

Hey there Doc T,

I'd agree with mg66, at least on the slabside.

I also have a Ruger Mark II "Slabside" which shoot VERY well.

I sent a Leupold 2X pistol scope to the factory and had them set the paralax to 25 yds.

My goal was to have a "minute of grouse head" handgun and this sure beats that requirement.
