Newbie With Reloading Questions
« on: November 02, 2006, 11:40:40 AM »
I will be reloading for my .223 Savage 16VLP(1/9 twist) my sod poodle buster) My .223 really likes the Black Hills Remanufactured 68grMHP, but I'd like to try a lighter 40-45gr V-max. Any input regarding dies would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I use an RCBS setup and RCBS dies except for .44 Mag (Lee dies that a buddy bought, it's his gun).  I know nothing about the .308x.444 cartridge, but it sounds like a JDJ type cartridge.  He based all of his on the .444 Marlin.  Get your stuff and setup a sturdy worktable and a quiet place to work to start with.  Try a couple of different powders that are in the appropriate range.  I think Hodgon offers 'try packs' that have like 4oz of each of 4 powders.  the .308 is a popular enough round that you should have no problem finding an appropriate powder.  Aside from trying different powders, the biggest thing that can influence accuracy is OAL.  Most people say start .030 off that lands and work from there.

My 223 shoots the 50gr v-max a little better than the 40gr,try both and go with the one that shoots best.

Thanks, I really like the v-maxs in my little 17hm2 rimfire. I'm sure they will do quite a number on PD in a 50gr 223 (although even my hollow point 68gr. match ammo was explosive at that velocity. Is your 223 a 1/9 twist Savage as well?
