Have you purchased a used barrel????
« on: October 31, 2006, 04:31:00 AM »
I would like to know how sucessful you have been with purchasing used barrels. Do most of them headspace and lock up tight, or is it that much better to send it back to the factory for fitting? Just curious 'cause I would like to get a couple of barrels and am trying to decide the best route to go. Any and all opinions welcome.

Thanks,
Ryan

I have not, but Im thinking of selling all of mine on Ebay, and starting over and increasing the number of barrels I do have.   :o

I guess for me , and with my 2 SB-2's they will fit one or the other about 85% of the time. With little or no major fitting.
I say go ahead and give it a try. If it doesn't fit you can always try fitting it yourself, get a Smith to fit it, or sell it. Seems no matter what caliber you have someone wants it so no problem there.

I have 4 receivers now.  When I started with just one, only about 50% of them fit.  Now, with the four, I have yet to find a barrel that won't fit one of them.

Having bought numerous used barrels and having numerous frames, I've never bought one that wouldn't fit, some need a little work on the latch shelf to make em lock up good, but I've only had to fit 2 barrels using epoxy and a shim, the rest have locked up fine. Having multiple frames is a big plus as far as luck in fitting a used barrel without any work.  BTW, H&R won't fit a used barrel to your frame, they'll only fit their new barrels from the acc barrel program.

Clarification -  I am not serisously considering selling all my barrels.

I was joking, really joking about the prices people pay on ebay for barrels.  Run of the mill barrels are sometimes getting 125-150, those can be had for about 100 fitted from the factory.

I have 3 SB1s and 2 SB2s.  I can usually find a fit.

Don't let the unknown shake you. There are enough good folks here to help that you can do the job. If you can use a file etc just do it. The FAQ is a vault of information.

Yea I have bought 4 extra barrels, Only 1 barrel failed to lock up on 2 frames
worked just fine the other 4 feames. That'sa why I want more than 1 or2 frames.

I think I only have one "extra" rifle barrel and three shotgun barrels for the 5 receivers I have.  I have two "store bought" rifle barrels and all the rest are what I have bought used.  They all fit on one or the other of the receivers.  Usually, the only advantage is not having to send the receiver in.  It does save a few dollars too, but very few.  ;)
