Cannon books on Google Books
« on: November 04, 2006, 12:02:24 PM »
Hello,
I've been enjoying reading the info on this forum for a month or so now, and think it is an awesome resource.

I recently got the cannon itch and hope to build a half or 1/3 scale piece once I get my other half-started gun projects done. I've  been in research mode and ran across a neat site that may be of interest to you all. Google Books is a project that is digitally scanning thousands of pre-1923 now public domain books from numerous institutions collections like Harvard College, The New York City Library, etc. Using their search engine you can find full copies of rather old and rare tiles on any subject and many are then available to download as PDF file for free.
( http://books.google.com/   Just be sure to use the "Full view books" setting to filter out all the modern books)
Below are three that I thought looked rather intriguing:

Gunnery in 1858: being a treatise on rifles, cannon, and sporting arms; explaining the principles...

Modern Warfare: Chapter VII Modern Breech-Loading Cannon -  1915 (neat discussion of Maxim's Pom-poms, etc)

LooseCnnn -

WELCOME to the board!

Very good of you to post these references as well!  I'll add them to the reference section with your instructions!

Sometimes the research stage takes a loooong time.  Get involved and send us some pictures of your (and your friends') cannons!
