model 7 scratching primer
« on: November 13, 2006, 09:30:45 AM »
I have a remington model seven 7mm-08 and noticed today when I unloaded the rifle there was a round scratch on the primer of the cartridge that was in the chamber. I loaded another round and unloaded again and the new round got the same scratch. I took the bolt out of the reciever and I can feel a burr around the firing pin hole.

So has anybody had this problem before? Whats the best way to remove the burr? I own several remington rifles and this is the first one I found to do this.

Not common but not really rare either.  Easy fix tho.  Get a 3-4 in. piece of 3/8 in. dowel rod and glue a disc of 280 to 400 grit black sandpaper to the end.  When it's dry, trim off any excess and then press the paper lightly against the bolt face while spinning the dowel a few times to remove the raised burr.  Any other method might radius the pin hole and that wouldn't be a good idea.

It would be ideal to disassemble the bolt before you start and then flush any residual abrasive grit out before reassembling it.
Common sense is an uncommon virtue
