Iron Sights
« on: November 01, 2006, 06:55:46 AM »
Greetings all,
I posted a question to the muzzleloaders board some time ago, and got different replies.  Hopefully someone here can agree and help me out.  I have a T/C Hawkin muzzleleoader. The point of impact at 50 yards is still about 6 inches to the left of the bull.  I have adjusted the rear site as far as it will go.  I cannot drift the rear site because it is screwed to the barrel. I need to drift the front site a bit to move the point of impact to the right.  Which way do I drift the front site to move the point of impact?  Also, any suggestions on how far I should drift it?  Thanks!

Front sight rule: move the sight in the direction of the error; in your case are shooting left so drift the sight to the left.

Use the concecpt of the military artillery. Make a generous correction to the left and over shoot. After viewing your impact, split the correction by moving the front sight  1/2 the distance to the right. I'll bet you'll "be on" with about 3 rounds usiing this technique.

ScoutMan is exactly correct.. I've never heard the artillery technique mention in this context before but it is a very useful analogy! Thanks for the tip..

Gunnut69,

Can't claim credit for that tip. Belongs to Jeff Cooper (RIP) from his book "Art of the Rifle", a must read for anyone who shoots a rifle.
