.460 S&W recoil?
« on: October 31, 2006, 10:40:56 AM »
Wondering if anyone out there may be able to help me with this...

I know recoil is a subjective term, but just how brutal would a 10" barreled Encore be in the .460 S&W?

Thanks!

Mark

It will be stout, I am shooting a 5 inch S&W 460 Mag that has an end cap installed "no comp" and it is manageable. But the Encore recoil is different than a revolver.
The cylinder gap allows gases to escape and reduces the recoil some. The Encore gives you the full power in the cylinder because there is no place for the gases to escape.
If  you're going to make a hole, make it a big one.

I would guess alot worse than my 500 S&W due to lack of weight. I would suggest at least a 14 in. barrel. That would not only reduce recoil alittle but would give you more velosity. I would also put an extra heavy forarm on it, and possible a muzzle brake.

I have owned (and fired) a couple of .454 Casull's from FA's as well as a .475 Linebaugh with no problems.

I also have a S&W Scandium J-frame .357 and have no problem with it's recoil.

How much worse would a 460S&W be in an Encore, any ideas? I know it would be difficult to quantify, but just looking for a baseline.

Thanks again!

The 454 is less then my hot load in a 44mag. I shoot a 15inch Encore in 460. wear a glove I find that it tears my index finger up after 5 shots. My buddy does not shoot alot he shot a 45,454 then the 460 he broke his thumb. the only other thing i can compair it to is my 444 in 10inch. Note Wear a weight lifting glove to protect your finger. The reciol is fun and it will clear the range.
