Win 94 .45 Colt
« on: October 18, 2006, 05:16:27 PM »
Have one that i want to put some heavier buffalo bore/grizzly/cor-bon loads thru.  Some experiences :P
Will my 94 Trapper take them like a soldier?
Will I not be able to and is there a recommended recoil pad?

Thanks!

as long as they will feed they will be fine. The gun is stout enough to take them.

I broke mine with heavy "Rugerloads"  -Linkage inside- I don't know if it was just bad parts or to hot on the loads so when I got it back I started loading a grain or two lower and I haven't had a problem since. With these loads I don't see a great performance drop so I'm good to go. Plus I get alittle less recoil. ;D

P>S Recoil pad is required for heavy loads -of course unless you like getting kicked hard. If you need a pad just look around there plenty being made for 94's! I put one on mine as I knew I'd be shooting some heavyrounds.

I took a M94 Trapper off a gunsmiths hands after he had replaced the original barrel which some nut had rebored to take 454. I have no idea how much 454 ammo the carbine may have swallowed, but it does just fine with a usual diet of 300 grain Ruger loads. I don't know how many times I've fired it "heavy" but it must be more than 2000 and less than 4000. It's a fine, strong gun. I don't see a need to a recoil pad with the little cartridge in a carbine, but then maybe that's because I often also shoot a #1 in 45-70 which has  a very minimal recoil pad.

Over 90% of the loads in my Trapper are plinker type, less than 900 f/s.  I do load it with generous amounts of H 4227 and H110 for hunting.  After a few years and less than 500 hunting loads through it, the hole in the front of the barrel where the magazine end-cap screw rests started to peen itself into a ditch.  I had the area fitted with a dovetail slug which is harder than barrel metal, drilled out a hole for the screw and added a neoprene washer (see leverguns.com).  Works fine now.
