eyes ain't what the used to be
« on: November 03, 2006, 09:44:48 AM »
My eye sight is not what it used to be ,what is the best scope to use on my 1895M (450 Marlin) and I don't want a pistol scope or a scout scope .I will never shoot over 200 yards and will need a lot of eye relief. my budjet is $200.00 to $400 for the scope and mount. it will need to be able to get a quick sight picture up close just in case .I want to do it right the first time so if I have to strech my budjet a bit I can.

With that kind of budget, I'd buy the 2 1/2X Leupold and Leupold mounts - offset rears- and go. I presently use the no-longer-manufactured Weaver 2 1/2X. It seems like a good scope and has help up so far. It is easier on the budget, but is, unfortunately, no longer made. I would prefer the even better Leupold if I had the money.

I'm pretty happy with the Leupold VX III in 1.75X6X32.  It has a fair bit of eye relief and a wide field of view.

Jon at the opticzone hase them for $399

I asked this very same question here a few weeks ago. I went with the Leupold 1 - 4x Shotgun Scope with heavy duplex reticle, using Warne mounts. Plenty of eye relief.

Golsovia,

I use a Weaver K2.5 on my Model 88 winchester.  They are still being made, just not in USA.  Mine says Japan on it.  Check out the site:

Yep, I see them still at their website - I don't recall if they pulled them for awhile; they may have. Try find them at the dealers though. I had just bought one before I heard they quit making them. Upon learning of their end, whether true or not, I tried to buy a couple more. Sold out. Sold out. Sold out. I finally found two more at MidSouth and bought them. I don't know who, if anyone, has them now.

Now, neither Midway nor Mid South nor Grafs carry them. Too bad.

Look at the Leupold "Ultralight" 2.5X. It has eye relief of 4.9"

That being said, don't sell short a ghost ring  rear and post front. I have the XS setup on a Ruger Compact. Make sure the post front is wide enough. Mine is.100" and could be wider.

Left eye: 20/25

I would use a set of Warne bases on it...I didn't the last time when I got my XLR...I went with the standard Leupold turn in front..windage rear base...Bad Mistake...the rear failed on it....From now on...the 2pc. Warne steel bases is what I use...Rings...if you don't plan on utilizing you sites anymore...I say go ahead and get the Warne rings as well...if your going to use your sites...then get a set of Warne quick release or Leupold quick release weaver style rings...both work great...and won't move..With the standard Warne rings and bases you'll have about $50 bucks give or take..and Cabella's have them in stock..Now the scope...Lots of folks will give lots of answers...but..for me...You won't find a better scope than Leupold... their standard VX-1..runs about $180.00...and is what I use...It handles heavy loads with ease...It does have friction ring adjustments instead of click adjustments..but..Leupold has made it just as good as the click adjustable scopes...It tracks just as well and I can assure you...mine has never moved once set......and it is 1/4" @100 yards  per line...The newer 2x7x33 VX-1 have their long range reticle in them..and go for about $100 more...so you have that option as well...You can find more expensive scopes...but..your eyes won't be able to tell..but your wallet certainly will...Leupolds non-critical eye relief is great..Folks always benchmark their scopes against a Leupold...and for good reason...they simpy are great scopes...
