« on: March 05, 2007, 11:53:59 AM »
I have wanted a jeep wrangler for a few years now but have always had pickups.(regular cab)
Will I have room for gear guns for two hunters.
Were do you guys put taken deer?
Any other jeep hunting tricks I should know.
I really want one.
Help me justify it?

I don't own a jeep but have experience with them. I think you should have enough room within reason. You basically would just have stuff piled in the back seat. I have a friend with a wrangler and he puts a hitch haul in the receiver hitch when he goes hunting. It is great for hauling deer, coolers, gas cans, stands or anything else you don't want in the cab. You could also put a rubbermaid box on it and haul some of your gear. I say go for it!

If you buy one, get a color you really like. I have a forest green jeep that I bought new in 1995, it now has 336,000 miles on it and I now hate forest green! I think you will like the maneuverability of the Wrangler compared to your pickup.

Thanks guys,

I had not thought about those "hitch haul" things.
That would work fine to haul a  deer.

Probably just get the x though. I don't have any rocks near here.
4 to 1 low range in the rubicon would be to low.(not to mention $10k more)

I just put my last deer in the back of my Wrangler after folding up the rear seat. The best mod for making a hunting jeep is to remove the carpeting.

As mentioned previously those hitch caddies are tha bomb! I need to buy/make one.

Up until this season, I had hunted out of a Jeep CJ 7 for 20 years.  I took it places that I couldn't have gotten a truck and probably shouldn't have taken it.  It is plenty for two people as long as it is a day trip or you are operating out of a base camp.  I took the rear seat out of mine and put a "shelf" across the back that ran from the tailgate to the front seats.  This made stuff easier to get too because it all wasn't in a big pile plus when you kill a deer you just take the stuff out take out the shelf put the deer in the "bed" of the Jeep, put the shelf back in and pile everything on the shelf, this keeps your gear from getting blood and such on it.  With the Wrangler you can also put a basket on top to hold extra gear as well as one on the spare tire carrier to hold a cooler or gear.  The Jeep is really a good hunting vehicle if you don't need to haul camping gear and hunting gear at the same time or pull a camper.  Have fun

That $10k gets you lots more than just a 4:1 low range in the transfercase.... D44 rear, d44hybrid front, selectable lockers front and rear, lower gears.  Larger, more agressive tires... the new ones also are getting an electronic swaybar disconnect like the current Dodge Powerwagons.

I agree that the rubicon is a good package for the money.
You would spend more trying to build an old jeep up that tuff.
The 4:1 low range is just the part I don't like.
I live in the plains and like to put it in low and leave it.

I was looking on the jeep web sight.
Built a wrangler x with 4.1 axle gears and rear locker for about $19K.
I supose the wife would talk me into A/C too.
Later 2"-3" lift and some AT tires.
That should get me within walking distance of anywhere around here.

We had a 1964 C J 5 for about 10 years and all I can say is that it was not a very good vehicle.

Every time something broke you had to pay double for it because it was a JEEP!

My dad's favorite past time was driving it through the woods and tearing off the spare tire.

His favorite off season past time was making a new quarter panel out of a piece of tin and putting the spare tire back on.

The best place to put a deer was over the hood.

A buddy of mine once shot a antler less deer on the first day of antlered rifle season and he threw it over the hood and went to a bar and drank for about 4 hours and nobody said a word.

If you ever bought one of them junk collectors that you put in the hitch receiver - you would know
That it takes away a lot of ground clearance especially when you go up or down a hill or across a uneven surface.

If you ever put a deer on one and drove down a muddy road in the wintertime - you would never buy one if you had to skin the deer or process the meat.

All the slop off your tires and off of everyone else tires and the road  goes to the back of the vehicle and gets all over your deer.

No offense but comparing a 65 CJ to a 97+ TJ or JK is like comparing a 64 Ford Falcon to a new Cadillac CTS Now days a Jeep is one of the CHEAPEST vehicles to restore, maintain and modify due to the tremendously strong aftermarket

they've came up with this new fangled invention since the 60's it's called a TOP ;) I've tried one and they work really well. Although I must admit they have to be on the Jeep in order to work properly ;D
