Youth stock questions
« on: November 06, 2006, 11:16:35 AM »
I am considering getting a youth stock for my 22 hornet super light, the target users are my boys.  I had my one son at the shop where it is on layaway and he seemed to wrap around it OK, but I am wondering if the 2" shorter would make handling in general eaiser for him (he is a tall lanky 10year old) and I was figuring in the 5 months untill he'll see action with it it would fit him better.

So in a nutshell what would be the positive  impacts on handling if I switch out the stock for him.

One thing local laws state a youth can hunt game with a gun till 14 so he probably won't try shooting  anything deer sized untill 14. Oddly gophers or coyotes are not considered game. :)

I ordered a youth butt stock directly from NEF for my .30-30 when my 14 year old was ready to hunt deer.  The stock was reasonably priced (I think about $35).  A single, long bolt secures the butt to the receiver.  If you don't have one, you may have to borrow a socket wrench extension to reach the bolt.

A stock that fits a youngster makes all the difference in the world.  Of course, changing back to the adult size stock is equally "cakey".

If the kid is tall and lanky I leave the stock alone. He will soon grow into it.

Since he is using iron sights  and quick sight aquisition is not needed as yet,  stock fit is not all that important.

When he is ready to go deer hunting then the stock fit becomes very important.
