Cooey Model 75 parts

Western Gun Parts up in Edmonton no longer sells parts to us profane non-licensed gunsmiths, and what's more, I did not have a clue Gunsmithing was that tightly regulated in Canada,  I never heard of the phrase: "licensed gunsmith", maybe I've been living under a rock. Numrich has never heard of Cooey's, they don't have parts for them, any suggestions? I need at least an un-headspaced bolt (maybe 2), maybe 1 new barrel, an extractor and extractor spring. One of my 75's has what appears to be a buildup of a really inferior grade of old varnish on it, or maybe it's old orange shellac or maybe even cosmo? How to get the rotten shite off of there, including in all kinds of hard to reach recesses?

I checked Numrich's web site and they list several Cooey models including the Mod 75 under the Winchester section.  They list very few parts, but they do list a bolt assembly and barrel, although the bolt appears to be cross referenced to the Mod 39.  Each is not listed as being "out of stock".

I found the following information on Rimfire Central regarding the Cooey Mod 75.  Below is a part of the thread:

"Cooey was the name of a Canadian company which made inexpensive .22 rifles from about 1919 to 1978.  They were bought out by Winchester in 1961 and made under the Cooey Winchester name until 1978. The Model 75 was a long barrelled single shot with a thick, bulbous stock ... Winchester cheapened the Cooey in the 1960's and renamed the rifle the 750."

"I have both guns - the 75 and the 750 ... the only difference I can see in my two rifles is one has a walnut stock and 27" bbl and the other is stocked in birch with a 22" bbl - the actions are identical."

Numrich also lists the Mod 750 and has limited parts, as well.

Thanks for the input, I am from Dartmouth, I'm aware that Cooey was around for a long time, thanks about the Winchester bit, If Numrich has them, then I'll have to get an IRC to get a bolt in to Canada, I've dealt with Numrich a lot, and I am generally very pleased with the service they give. Good old fashioned American know how eh? Yeah, I like the 'bulbous' bit, my uncle had one of them years ago when he was still alive that I shot a bit, The two I have are going to get refurbed sooner or later.

I've dealt with Numrich a few times as well.  Good folks, but the shipping can be a bit expensive.  Lately, it seems everything I've read about Winchester production or ventures after 1964 has been negative. I know very little about the company.  Until recently, I've never owned a Winchester.  Primarliy because they were always more expensive. Even now I only have a Mod 1400, Mod 37 & a Mod 70 Black Shadow.  Each shoot very well and I've not had any problems with either.

So far, no word back from Numrich about whether the bolts they have are un-headspaced, probably not, might have to get the bbl shortened(you know, breech stub cut off and redone) to make the existing bolt work.

If you are unable to find the parts you need, or they are prohibitively expensive, it might not be a bad idea to have the barrel set back. Typically it isn't too big of a deal (if you know someone with a lathe, or have access to one yourself). Of course, you will have to have it reamed and headspaced.....
of course, for a "licensed gunsmith" to do all this work...it WILL be pricey.

Cooey parts are easy to come by. Try posting a want to buy ad on the CanadianGunNutz.com forum. I seriously doubt you'd have too much problem finding what you need. Cooey rifles, while inexpensive, are well made rifles and they are quite well known for tack driving accuracy. I currently own three Cooey bolt action rimfires, as well as a number of Cooey shotguns in various gauges. They are tough, reliable workhorses and they helped get many a young man afield over the past decades.
