AMT .22 Magnum pistol problems
« on: October 21, 2006, 10:35:03 AM »
We have a relative staying with us for a few days.  Yesterday, he wanted to fire his AMT .22 magnum pistol, which he carries for self-protection.  I dug out three weights of bullet, the Federal 50 grain, Remington 40 grain, and Remington 30 grain.  It was getting dusky, so I set up some clay pigeons and we fired on them from the south porch.  The 30 grainers made the best fireball, but our fun ended when the slide stop popped out and it took us about 20 minutes to find it and get back to shooting.  Even with the heaviest bullets, we got failure to eject stoppages.  The 50 grainers were best, but the last shot still tied up the gun.  When we examined it later, we also noted that the spring guide rod looked bent.  I told him that it looked to me like the gun needed to go to a gunsmith for a major rework.  If it were mine, I would get rid of it.  Is this pistol worth the time and effort to get it up to par?

AMT(ArcadiaMachineTool) has made several limited production pistols in unusual calibers. The quality has not been great in my opinion and in the examples I've seen. They even made a stainless veriant of the 10/22 and autopistol. I would never rely on any rimfire for defense and the mag is worse..(in an auto).

The 22 mag AMT pistol is known for problems.  You'll see these at pawn shops pretty regularly.  They make their way around like a HS Cheerleader, and get dumped for almost the same reasons. ;)

Oldtimer,

I had one when I was in collage, It would jam on just about everything. Like Cecil, I couldn't sell ti fast enough! Now the .30 carbine on the other hand, if I hadn't needed money real bad I would still have that beast fireballs and all!

Thanks to all for your replies.  It sure is a shame that they built such a good looking piece and then did not tune it.  If it had been reliable I would have liked to have had one myself.

Mine came with a note to only use Winchesters. I had the same problems with other brands of ammo. Clean it up and try a box of winchesters.
