Kel-Tec PLR-16 pistol
« on: October 31, 2006, 07:24:00 AM »
I have been thinking of picking up a Kel Tec PLR 16 .223 Pistol it seems like a fun little piece fpr Yotes and HD. I was thinking about putting a front vertical grip on it but then... learned that it would then become an AOW because the NFA classifies a pistol as being one handed or something so now im thinking against it, i really wanted the front grip.  Had any of you know about that law before?  Hope you dont have any front vertical grips.

Should i still get one?

Does anyone have experience with them or the other keltec su16 rifles?

I am planning on adding one to my collection in a month or two (I have a thing for the "out of the ordinary" guns).  I don't have their SU16, but do have 2 of the sub 2000s.  I love them both - the 9mm and 40.  I was going to get their SU, but found a deal on an AR 180 that I couldn't pass up.

You don't see much on the gun, because most guys around here are purists I guess.  If you get one before I do, would you either post a review, or email me?  I'm not big on accuracy with a gun like the PLR, but reliability is a whole other story.

There is a review at www.GUNBLAST.com its under the archives section, they have all the accesories for it and there is a cool video of the guy shooting it.  It also apears very accurate for what it is.  Take a look.

OK...it's done.  I should have one by the end of next week!

I called one of our local dealers about the PLR, and he said "Kel-Tec is either already out of business, or going out soon."  SO, I called the company direct.  The sales rep laughed and said they have more business than they can handle.  Apparently, almost everything they make is on backorder.  They said there are weekly shipments going out to the distributors, but it's hard to keep up with the demand.

I called another dealer here, and he said he can have one for me by next Friday.

I think Kel-tec is one of those up-and-coming gun makers.  Their guns are good quality and you get a lot for what you spend.  They are also planning on moving into "sporting and special purpose" rifles (other than the AR varients I assume).  I guess more "gun collectors" would be interrested in them if they just went ahead and doubled their price...that way they might seem more "worthy" of attention.

WELL..that didn't work.

My dealer KNEW one of his distributors would be able to get the gun.  Out of the 3 he uses, not a single one had the gun, nor could they estimate how long it would take to get it from from Kel Tec.

Looks like EVERYTHING from Kel Tec is in demand.  I'm still on the waiting list (going on a month now) for a second Sub 2000 in 9mm.

Don't you just love the BS from some local dealers?  Had one tell me all the 7.62x39 ammo had dried up and there was none anywhere - what a total crock.  Truth is he just didn't have any but apparently felt compelled to lie about it.  Another tried to tell me an M1 carbine he was selling was not an import, until I pointed out the import mark under the front sight.

I'm very impressed wth the .223 Kel-Tec SU16CA and their customer service.  Seems I saw a Sub 2000 on Gunbroker for about $300.

Just won one on AuctionArms.  HOPEFULLY, I should have it within a week and a half to 2 weeks.  I'll let you guys know how I like it shortly after.

By the way, I think the on-line gun auctions are the way to go for hard to find guns.  Even with the FFL and shipping, I ended up saving the ammount I would have paid on tax.

I got "the call" from my dealer this morning...MY PLR CAME IN....so, I volunteered to hit the grocery store (gave me a LEGITIMATE reason to go to town)  ;D  It's a pretty neat gun.

I plan on taking it out Sunday or Monday to "play". I'll let you know how I like it.  I do think I need to get the hand guards and suppresser.

I have a PLR and I love it.  It is so much fun to shoot at the range, and I am even going to try to hunt with it.  I have a 2x red dot on mine, and with very little shooting, I am getting 2" grous at 50 yards.

Do you have the fore end and muzzle brake?  If so, did you get them through Kel-tec, or do you have another source?

Definitely get the forend.  There is a guy at the KTOG forum who sells accessories at competitive prices.  I bought a Phantom flash hider and a single point sling.  I'll find out what my wife did with the digital camera, and I'll get pics up.
