45/70 Winchester load
« on: November 07, 2006, 11:00:16 AM »
Does anybody know what the 45/70 winchester 300 gr. jhp load is? Just got a 45/70 Handi rifle and sighted in with Win. loads. The rifle shoots great with it so would like to duplicate it . Thanks   A.J.

They list is as 1880fps, it's a trapdoor level, dunno which bullet they use for sure, it closely resembles the Speer 300gr HP, but the HP is just a bit different. Speer's load data can be found on their web site.

I was thinking they used the hornady # 4500 bullet which I just picked a hundred. Looks like the same bullet. Have you got any idea of powder and charge?  Thanks   A.J.

I don't have any of the Hornady 300gr to make a comparison to. Dunno about powder, you'll just have to pick one and work up a load from existing trapdoor data, I'm partial to Hodgdon Extreme powders, H4198 and H4895 are two that I've used most, but I've also used H322, but most of my H&R 300gr loads are in the upper levergun levels and/or bigger bullets, 350gr at 2000fps and 300gr at 2400fps.

Reloder 7 is a real popular powder with the Levergun boys, pick one you have and work with it.

The Hornady manual shows 8 powders to 1800-1900fps for their 300gr HP... SR4759, Viht N-120, IMR4227, AA5744, Viht N-130, RL7, H322 and IMR3031.

Thanks Tim, seems like I heard some where that Hodgdon was making powder for Winchester now so maybe I'll try to work up some loads with H322 and see what happens from there.

Here's Hodgdon's data for the 300gr Sierra...

http://www.hodgdon.com/data/rifle/4570gov.php

The Hornady book shows H322 at 40.7gr start to 54.8gr max @1900fps, 29½" barrel, Win brass, Fed 210 primers, COL of 2.550".

If you want, I wouldn't hesitate to go into the levergun data if you don't mind the recoil, the rifle will easily handle it. Hornady doesn't show H322 in that data tho.

Have fun!!

Either IMR load for the 300 grain Hornady would be pretty close to the factory load.
