A Unfournate Loss ...
« on: November 01, 2006, 03:05:00 PM »
A 68-year-old downstate resident died from a heart attack in the Adirondacks, where last weekend's heavy snowfall prevented emergency crews from reaching the man until a
road was cleared.

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office says Edward Dzubak of Mahopac in Putnam County was with a ten-person hunting party in the Moose River Plains when he collapsed Sunday afternoon. Some of the hunters performed CPR while others went for help. But rescue efforts were hampered by more than 20 inches of wet snow and high winds that brought down trees, blocking the road to the remote hunting camp. Dzubak was pronounced dead Monday by the county coroner.

If anyone knows of this family let them know that we are  prayin for them ....

As some one who was there, I was very disapointed in the responce efforts (or lack of) by the state and rangers.

This incident has proved to me that when you are going to be in area that maybe difficult to access emergency care, you can only rely on yourself.

I will not get into too much detail, but it really pays to be prepaired/trained for any emergency.  We did the best we could, but a massive heart attack victim doesnt have too good of odds, especially in the back woods.

I'm not sure if you were in the hunting party or with the emergancy response crew but I'm sure you did your best !!! You send a good message - where ever you hunt on your own farm or in the remote wilderness , the message is "BE PREPARED" .... there is so much more that I want to say but I'm gonna keep it simple ....

....... prepare for the worst and hope for the best .
....... better to have it and not need it than not have it and really need it .

I was part of the hunting party.  We are prepared for almost anything to go wrong, and it usually does.  We have chainsaws, 4 wheel drive, first aid training, ect.  Somethings you just cant help though.

We were prepared for a 10 day hunt, with all the snow and rain that nature could give us.

It took 3 hours for us to clear 8 miles of road to get out for help, only to have it blocked again by more trees and snow right behind us.

We tried the best we could.  Even without the snow he would have died before we could get out.

It will come with very little consulation but as a nurse and a past critical care emt, you did all you could do.  If someones heart stops, if you can not get a defibrilator to them within 5 minutes of the attack their chances of survival drop rapidly with every minute. The only way you could have had a chance was with the proper medications a defib and a protocol to administer them and you may and I repeat may have had a chance. I am sorry for the loss and as I stated I am sure you did all you could do. If the attack was massive he could have had it at a hospital and not had a better chance. At least he passed doing something he loved being in the woods.

Thanks,

His wife had just passed 7 months ago from cancer, so I guess things have a way of 'working' out.

Good luck this season,

This is a very unfournate thing to have happen.Im sure you all did everything you could. The Moose River Plains is very rough place to hunt.I spent two nites in the woods up there by myself draging a deer out over 2 miles in late november
That dog will hunt
