Hunting in Zim these days is still super provided you do your homework on the outfitter and areas you plan to hunt. I last hunted there in 2004 and had a fantastic hunt - 59" Kudu, 176# leopard, 39" cape buff, nyala, zebra, wildebeast, etc. I am planning to return in 2008. I am aware of many, many, other successful hunts by others in 2005 and 2006 that ran glitch free and were highly successful. And Zim remains safe for white hunters. I am not aware of a single instance of US hunters being harassed in Zim over the course of many, many, hunts the past several years. Indeed, when we hunted there in 2004, we took our wives and toured Victoria Falls and other tourist attractions before the hunt. Because of the political situation there, the pricing is very attractive and one of the better bargains in all of African hunting.
Having said all the above, caution is required in selecting the areas and safari companies to hunt with. Some areas have been hit hard by poaching; but many of the safari companies, such as HHK and many others, employ anti-poaching patrols in their conservancies and allotted tribal areas and game is abundant. Care must be taken to avoid those few outfits that are front operations for Mugabe's cronies and offer hunts on properties confiscated from white farmers. While petrol and some supplies can be hard to come by, almost all hunting operations have been able to work around the shortages.
All in all Zim remains a great hunting destination for those who do their homework, especially if dangerous game is on your menu. Having said the above, Zim is probably not the best destination for a first-time African hunt for plains game. For most first timers, South Africa or Namibia are probably better bets, easier to arrange, and a good bargain.
