50 cal RB works
« on: November 05, 2006, 09:53:33 AM »
A 65 yard shot with a roundball over 70 grains of FFFG. 190 pound, 10 point buck, scoring 132.   He only went about 10 yards after the pass through shot.  I love this gun.

Good shot!
What a beautiful deer.
I have killed quite a few with the patched round ball.
There is not a deer on the continent that can withstand a single .490 round ball through the lungs, at 100 yards or less.
Aim small don't miss.

Nice one  ;)
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

Good buck, good shot...PRBs have been getting it done for the last few hundred years...just because there are more powerful scope sighted choices available does not diminish one single bit the effectiveness of a patched round ball...congratulations!

Nice deer. No reason why a round ball won't perform nicely when used within its effective range.

When I shot this deer, I was in the top of a huge cedar tree.  The shot was at a downward angle from the next to last last rib about a third of the way down and it exited about middle of the ribs on the other side.  At the shot, I heard the ball go bouncing off trees in the creek bottom.  When the smoke cleared, I saw the buck starting to trot off and I am thinking I missed.  Upon examination, it was just clean pass through lung shot, taking out a rib on each side.
This gun is a 15 year old Traditions  gun built in the configuration of an English sporting rifle with a 1-66" twist.  I modified the rear site to a wide shallow V in the style of express rifles. It has a brass bead for a front sight. I am going to inlay a piece of silver wire into the rear sight to form a post in the bottom of the V. As I get older, this has been the only open sight set up that my eyes will allow me to shoot.

Great deer. I hunt south of Stewart and Arpelar. Lots of nice deer in that area. I saw one cross the road Sunday morning on the way to hunt just north of the river bridge that looked about like your deer. Nice high rack.
Congratulations

Hawkeye, I live just west of the highway on the north side of the river at Calvin. Our land joins the river.  I have seen a nice high racked buck with a doe for about a week just north of the bridge.  This buck was killed on leased land a couple of miles east of Calvin.  Good food and age always makes for good bucks.
