Swampys'gonna be prouda me!
« on: September 14, 2010, 04:01:17 AM »
In a couple of the other foums I discussed my love-hate relationship with my Rem 750 Woodsmaster in 35whalen.  I'm quite enamoured with the cartridge even after a disappointment with a so chambered #1.  The 750 was very reliable and attractive piece to be sure....but...wouldn't shoot a group worth its salt. So...after a alot of components and several months, it's gone.

I've replaced it with a new, 700CDL in ... 35whalen of course.  Still a heck of gun and I got a nice deal cause it's in 35wh.  I did some trigger adjustment and while I could lighten it, it's really creepy (I suspect a Timney is in its future).  I'll shoot it this weekend and see how it does.  Now....what to hunt????????

You chose well with the Whelen.  You chose poorly with the Sako.

The remingtons are good guns and usually very accurate  :D  but no one in their right mind can fault a Sako, their top drawer  ;)

For a foreign made rifle the Sako isn't bad.  Of course at that price they should be excellent.

Swampys right....oooohhh that hurts.....the SAKO is ALOT of money...twice the price of a rem700.  The real question is, is it worth it.....I sayyyy yes...I think so.  I like the detachable box magazine that top loads, the bolt release button and the easily adjustable trigger.  I'm not at all crazy about the rubberized stock or the proprietary rings and mounts (I ended up with Leupolds at $127 for rings and mounts).  I like the fluted, stainless barrel but would have preferred a 24" tube.  No deal breakers here.

My new M700 was less than 1/2 the price.  I adjusted the trigger and it was still gritty with alot of creep...so...I installed a timney...problem solved for an addnl $125.  Rings and mounts, Leupold, about $50.  24" barrel...check.   Accuracy....wayyy better than the 750 but no where near the SAKO....not even close but I'm still working on it.

BTW...both rifles wear the exact same Leupold Vari X III 3.5x10x40 scopes (silver on the Sako, blue of the Rem).

For the money....a 700 is a deal.....if you had the $$ and could have either one set up the way you want, a side by side comparison...SAKO.....

I have a 700 CDL in 35 Whelen. Handles like the old Mountain rifle style. very nice. After bedding and taking out the pressure point, it shoots 1" @ 100yds. Thinkin that I may take it "Deering" this year.

Life's too short to shoot foreign made rifles.  I would want one at 1/2 price.

The A7 IS a great rifle....as is my 85... as is the 700.  Rest be assured...I have a heck of a lot more Remingtons than Sakos. I'll admit though.....as much as I like the new Sako....that 700 in the whalen..... :-*
