how to lube?
« on: April 19, 2003, 09:50:29 PM »
I am currently using lee liquid alox, which is doing a good job. I just don't like the lube all over the bullets, EVERYTHING sticks to the exposed part, so I have been wiping it off after loading, I figure this can't hurt since most of what I wipe off I would loose when the bullet is forced through the chamber throats any way. what I want to know is how do I lube my bullets if I want to try a home made lube, I seen a lithium greese and bees wax lube I am interested in trying, I - DO NOT- want to invest in a lube sizer. I am thinking I can just heat it to soften and dip the base of the bullet in it, then set on wax paper to harden over night, is this how its done? I appreciate your help!!!

The Lee Alox lube can be thinned with mineral spirits or warmed in hot water. I find I can lube some of the bullets I use just by putting a drop of lube on the tip of my index finger and rolling the bullets between my thumb and index finger. Coating goes on light and that is all that is needed. Unwanted caoting can also be removed with mineral spirits. Rich

I'm sure you've seen the "cookie cutter" method if you have any Lee molds. I've taken an old cake tin and melted beeswax mixed with olive oil in it (not the smartest thing to do in the house!) and set the cast bullets into the melted and stirred mixture, and used a close fitting piece of plastic (mine was salvaged from assembling a hot wheels toy for my grandsons) to cut the bullets from the hardened lube. After a while you'll get tired or this and get a lubrisizer anyway. might as well get one before the price goes up!

You can dip.

Easiest way is a yard sale crockpot or electric skillet. Get dead level and add enough lube to cover the lube bands. I drop a short length of aluminum angle iron in mine. Grab bullet with tweasers or long nose pliers and push to bottom. Touch base to angle iron in the pot to drain surplus. Place bullet on old cookie sheet to cool and then run through a Lee push through.
