think of a new barrel
« on: November 13, 2006, 05:08:11 PM »
I was looking at the barrel program online tonight.  I see that NEF offers a 450 Marlin barrel for an ultra.  Will they put that on my regular handi?  Are they not the same receiver?  What are you folks opinion regarding 45-70 vs. 450?  Is one better than the other for handloading?  Help me out, do I go "classic" cartridge or "hot new cartridge"?  Your opinions are greatly appreciated!

I can't answer your first question about what they (NEF) might or might not do about a 450 Marlin barrel on a receiver (but someone here will have that for you)... What I can do is respond to your request for opinions...

I am n favor of going "classic". That's it... my opinion. I have no technical reasons or statistics, just my opinion, and that's what ya asked for.  ;D

Have fun deciding... and remember, with Handis the deciding never really ends! ;)

In a Handi, a 45-70 can do anything the 450 Marlin can do - and then some with the slightly more case capacity.   ...and do it cheaper.

If you reload, 45-70 brass can be had for much less then 450 marlin.  If you buy boxed ammo, same thing..  Although none of the big ammo makers make Marlin/Ruger #1 loads - keeping pressures safe for people that think a Springfield Trapdoor can handle anything.  With the blessing of the Handi, Marlin Lever guns, and Ruger #1's - Buffalo Bore ammo can take anything that walks on Earth with the 45-70.

The .450M is a ballistic twin to the .45-70, if you are a recoil junkie and don't handload, you'll love it. There's only one factory load level, hot!! Unlike the .45-70 which most factory loads are trapdoor levels and have mild to moderate recoil, the .450M has no trapdoor load level in factory ammo, unless you handload em to .45-70 trapdoor levels which there is data for.

Kinda takes the fun out of shooting them, and there have been several sold here due to the recoil. You can see the recoil of the .450M compared to .45-70 trapdoor loads in the following table.

http://www.chuckhawks.com/recoil_table.htm

H&R will fit the .450M barrel to any SB2 frame(Except the slug gun SB2) made '99 and later.

Wait till after the first of the year...you'll see about the same prices for them...Brass here at Grafts is running $27.99 for Remmy brass...and $28.99 for the nickle...for 50 count bags... :o for the 45-70...It's a whole $1.00 cheaper for the 450M...I know you can get it on line cheaper...so hopefully that remains the same...

I would advise you to go with the 45-70. Ammo is readily available almost everywhere and in factory loads it will be much more enjoyable to shoot. If you hand load you can match 450 marlin velocities in the  strong Handi action but the recoil in the lighter rifle is not for the faint hearted, and will shorten your shooting sessions somewhat. And if you realy want a recoil adventure load up some of the Beartooth  Pile drivers.

Thanks for all the feedback!  I will probably go classic with the 45-70, since I have a hornet and a 3030.  Maybe I just like rimmed cartridges.
