All joking about calibers aside I agree with Halwg.  I just hope everyone has a rifle that they like as much as I like my 30-06.

This debate will go on ad naseum.  The 30-06 is a great caliber, but so are the 308, 270, 7mm mag, 300 Savage, 30-30, 35 remington, 7mm/08, 25-06, 35 Whelan, etc., etc., etc.  Who cares, really?  You all have a favorite caliber, gun and load that you shoot, and is it any better than someone else's...sure to you it is.  I was raised hunting with a 30-06, I like it, and I shoot it well.  I'll continue to use it.

About the most sensible post I've seen.  In reality for most deer, any and everything between .243 and .35 Whelan will be fine for most hunters.  I have .30-06's.  I like them.  I have other rifles that work equally as well.  I like those too.   Most of my shots are under 100 yards anyways.  Half the time I grab whatever rifle I'm in the mood for and I know has a scope that is zeroed.

Hello all. Growing up in the 50's and 60's the shooting world was full of tales of the .264 Win and the 7 Mag. While the .264 grabbed my fancy real quick the 7 Mag. did nothing for me. To this day I have only fired one round of 7 Mag and that thru a friends rifle but let's talk about the old 'o6. The 30/06 was old news, yesteryears caliber, 100 yrs. old and worn out. Now we have the wssm's, the wsm's,the Rumg's (and whatever else) making the old 'o6 as in the same category as a a horse-drawn wagon. I was in the same boat(new was better) but suddenly it came to me-the 'o6 was the cat's meow for 90% of North American game. A variety of bullets, easy to reload and plenty of brass; what's not to like? Let me hear from you if you "found" the 30/06 as I have.  Kix
Correction it has taken every species of big game animal on the north american continent that was accomplished in 1924 with a  Springfield 03 in 30-06 customized by Griffin & Howe. BTW the 270 did the same fete was repeated by Jack O'Connor. So much for all of the mega magnums in todays market, are they really needed?I was on a forum and mentioned the 30-06 will take anything but the person told me I wouldn't be allowed to hunt big game in Alaska with a 30-06 even though it was the leading rifle used in alaska per the alaskan game dept back several years ago, don't know what's the big favorite now.

Where does it say the 30-06 Springfield isn't allowed in Alaska?
