I emailed Anschutz asking for sources of information on the Savage/Anschutz Mk12 I have and received a reply today. I was told no information exist for this rifle because, and I quote "rifle is too old". Savage imported Anschutz from 1963 to 1981 and it was during this era that my rifle was built. I would have guessed that their records could go back further than 40 years considering the age and status of this company.
It seems if you get a few wrinkles and a little gray hair these Germans will kick you to the curb.

Was that answer from Anschutz GmbH in Ulm, or from someone here in the US? If it was someone here, they may not have records about anything that was imported before they secured the distribution rights. If that was the answer from Germany, I am very dissapointed....

Have you tried contacting Savage? Since they were the importer of record at the time your rifle was manufactured, their records may be better (considering also the age and status of Savage).

What information are you looking for, anyway? You may be better served by researching some vintage gun mags for reviews, or maybe old Gun Digests or Shooters Bibles.

Co-incidentally, I have close to hand a 1967 Gun Digest and cannot find any mention of this firearm (but there is a favourable review of the new Smith & Wesson stainless steel Mdl 60 revolver...if it proves popular, they may offer other guns in stainless...).

Majic: Like mike was saying you might contact Savage as I have a savage Anschultz 22mag I purchased new in I believe 65-66 so they might have info on yours I also could not find anything about a model 12 either good luck.

I think you hit a cultural snag. That's the way things work in Western Europe. They typically only keep track of current production items.

My reply came from Barbel Ehret, at Ulm, Germany. Several books mention that rifles stamped "Savage/Anschutz" were built in Germany for the US market, and those stamped "Anschutz/Savage" were built by Savage for export to the European market.
I do know that it's not built on a 54 or 64 action. The 1451 has it's own action, and I have no idea how many different actions Anschutz built. I have also seen references of a Mk10, but no pictures of one to compare the two.
My rifle is a single shot with an adjustable trigger. The stock has a palm swell, wide forearm, and an adjustable stop for your hand. The bull barrel is 21" long, but there are no holes or dovetail for a front sight so it may have been cut (the Mk10 has a 26" barrel).
I have seen a few questions asked about this model on the internet before, but no one seemed to know much about it.
I will try to contact Savage to see if they know anything about this ghost of a rifle.
If I figure out how to post pics here I will have a pic of it for those interested.

Well, I am dissapointed. I don't think that its an especially European approach, as the people at Leica and Linhof are very accomodating. Perhaps camera people appreciate their company history and legacy somewhat more than Anschutz.

I'd be tempted to address something to Dieter himself...after all, its his name over the door. Just remember that you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

I'd like to see a picture if you can post it.

I had one a few years ago and found it to be an accurate rifle. A friend bought one for local rimfire matches, and since has lost his job and wants to sell it.

Chuck, what was the length of the barrel on your Mk12, and what type of sights came on it?
How much does your friend wants for his and does it has it's original sights?
