Tried a bunch of sabots
« on: November 12, 2006, 09:41:45 AM »
Today I finally got out to try my new to me Remington 1100 LT-20 fully rifled barrel with a synthetic stock. My only changes to this beautiful gun was a set of Williams Fire Sights and an Uncle Mike's forend cap with the same sling I have used for many years on my Model 51. This gun is so light compared to the Ithaca! Living in masachusetts it took over six months to round up the ammo to try.
                                                       AMMO
Remington Copper solids.Lightfield Hybred,Remington Core-Lokt,Remington Buckhammer,Winchester Platinum Tip,Winchester Partition Gold and Hornady SST.
The distance was a tape measured 75 yards with two chairs (one for me and one for the gun). The day was partly sunny and there was no wind to speak of.
I tried three Remington solids to get close to the 4 inch center and made some adjustments to the rear site. One more shot and one more adjustment and then got serious.
                                                         RESULTS
Remington Copper Solid ----- -a little under 5 inches
Remington Core-Lokt------------Terrible one flier that did not even hit the 40'X40' target
Remington Buckhammer--------a little over three inches but vertical stringing but I was getting impressed
Winchester Platinum Tip--------all i could say is WOW!!! perfect clover leaf a little under three inches
Winchester Partition Gold-------all over the place but at least on the target
Lightfield Hybreds------------------again a little over three inches no stringing
Hornady SST-------------------------with all the hype on this one I expected a lot. The group was very high
with a group size of seven inches
The Winchester Platinum Tips were outstanding. I did not think a slug gun with open sights was capable of this type of performance. I urge all slug gun hunters to try a bunch of brands, I am sure one out there will be just as outstanding
                                                  CLEAN UP
This little Remington impressed me again. A lot of shells fired and I expected a barrel full of plastic. A little Hoppes #9 and  three swipes with a bronze bore brush and then a couple of patches it was spotless.
I can say that my gun does not like the 1900 fps slugs or the full copper partions. I am sure Winchester BRI would of done well also but I could not find any at shooting time.

josie wales, That was a great report and an expensive too. Thanks I enjoyed reading it. I also shoot a 20 gauge when I limited to shotgun only. Mine is a Mossberg 20 gauge throphy slugger with the cantaliever scope mount barrel and raised cheek piece. I tried a bunch of diiferent slugs when I bought it and mine prefered the Remington Copper Solids.
They were VERY tight at 50 and about two inches at 100 yards with a Simmons Whitetail Expedition 2-7x32 scope.
It did ok with the Winchester BRI but I heard they didn't do so well as far as "on deer performance".
It also liked the Buckhammer's but my shoulder DIDN'T.
I couldn't hit a barn with the Lightfield's or the Partition's.
I just recently picked up a few boxes of the SSt's but have not had a chance to fire them YET....
I Should be going to the range one day this week.

Well I just tried the 20 gauge S.S.T.'s out and my Mossberg didn't like them at all. I was all over the place with them probalby 7 or 8" if I was lucky. I did shoot some more (2 3/4" buckhammer's  :'((OUCH) and they shoot very well for me. They shoot through the same hole at 25 yards and at 50 they are just about touching but at 100 they open up to about 4" and hit a few inches low.
I shot some Remington copper solids they did ok to, close but not quite as good as the buckhammer. Man my shoulder hurts.

My buddy1s remy loved the sst slug, I shot a heavy barreled New england w/ a 2x7 swift scope & lightfields are the ticket.  Mike
