Shooting Good
« on: November 12, 2006, 04:48:03 PM »
Well I took my 54 cal ball shooter out today to sight it in for muzzle loading season. Made some changes. Put a different rear sight on it (Open)  and modified my front sight with a fiber optic stem on it. Do not know about longer distances but that red fiber optic up front with a regular open sight in back allowed me to shoot the open sights pretty well. Barrel is a Green Mountain 1 in 72 Twist 32 inches long. 80 grains of FFF Goex and a .010 patch with a 535 round ball put them dead center of the bullseye one ragged hole shot after shot. I would say it is ready for deer season. I only take close shots so a 25 yard zero should work fine for me. I doubt if I would shoot over 50. Gonna take out the fast twist 1 in 28 under hammer tomorrow that has an other Green Mountain Barrel.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

Good shooting!
If you are SURE you will never take a shot over 50, you are fine.
But, if you think you might take that 70 yard shot, you need to practice at that range.
Aim small don't miss.

Most all my shots I have taken with with a rifle or pistol in the past have been at close ranges. I hunt mostlly heavy wooded areas. I have not shot one with a muzzle loader yet maybe this year. I have passed on shots I felt were too far since I do not use a scope on my muzzle loaders they are either peep sights or open sights or in some cases a red dot and to me a red dot is a short range sight too.

I take my first shots at 12 1/2 yards, a zero at that range will put me at zero again at 75 or 80 yards and not more'n 2" high at midrange, about 60 yards. Then at 100 it'll be 2 or 2 1/2" low. I can't call my shots on a nice buck any closer'n that.  ;)
