I am a big fan of the Dan Wesson double action revolvers BUT I am seriously looking at the S&W 29-2 for my next purchase. The application is a backup side arm for hunting situations to go with a lever action 1894 in 44 mag.

Are there any other suggestions?

the 629 smith is my favorite gun......periods....

the newer smiths will handle higher preasure they say

i like my 5 inch one the best
if my rifle were to break while hunting
i would just continue the hunt with it

the 3 inch one is easy to pocket

the older ones are real nice and smooth tho

just go with stainless or choose between rust or oil stained clothes
remember oil stinks to us AND game

I think you should just take one of your Dan Wessons to the welding shop, and have them weld the bbl. on "properly". Then a couple hundred more, to get the action smooooothed up, and you will be "close enough" to a Smith, you won't need one... ha ha ha

I have a Ruger 96/44 and a 29N as back up. I mean, its a suggestion, but not far enough away from the 1894 & 29-2 to make that big of a difference.

I think its a great combo.

I am at a loss as to what you want in your question?
Are you looking for anyone that has one and is willing to sell it?
Are you looking for what to look for in the gun?
Do you want 2, 4, 6, 6.5 or 8 3/8". Unlike the Dan Wesson the barrel is not interchangable. Would be neat if it were.
As far as buying a used one... I have not seen a used one in a store in a long time. And when I have they wanted a lot for them.
$500 was about as cheap as I saw.
I did see a new 629 in the local store, he had two a 4 and a 6" and wanted $850 for either.
The 4 or the 6 you can find holsters for easily from most makers.
I have a S&W M29- I think mine is a 3. in 6" and love the gun.
I have been thinking of a 629 in 4" for a couple reasons. I think the 4" is a little easier when sitting in a blind and the stainless steel sounds like a better for out in the wet woods, oh and I have a really great set of un checkered dark wood stocks that would look great in the silver gun.

Actually, with the dash 2 series (screw in bbls.) it's not so hard to fit different bbls., and then they are easily changed after that.

ALL S&W revolvers have "screw in" barrels. Older ones were pinned and newer ones are not but still all barrels are threaded and "screwed in".

I have had Dan Wesson guns in the past and it will take a little bit of gun smithing to add the needed stuff for the Dan Wesson barrels.
I had a spare 586 S&W barrel laying around and the threads were wrong and way too small to fit into my Dan Wesson. Things may be different with the DW and S&W N frames.

OK, i should have said "pinned" and "screwed in"... Those are the only models i have had any experience with, as to making them into "switch bbl." guns. Perhaps, the newer ones can to done too, i just haven't dealt with them...

theres nothing wrong with the way dan wesson barrels fit the frame. I dont own one but have shot many and there cosistantly one of the most accurate da guns you will find. there also probably a stronger gun then a smith. Personaly im not that crazy about there looks but there a good gun.

No one said a bad thing about the Dan Wessons.
I too liked mine and it was a neat gun.
I like the cylinder release on the S&W better and thought it would be neat to have a S&W Pistol pack but after looking at the threads in the Dan Wesson too much metal would have to be removed for the Dan Wesson barrels to fit and work. A post would also need to be added to the frame to hold the barrel shroud.

I have a Smith 386sc 7 shot 357 magnum that I constantly carry as a backup when I hunt. Quite frankly I don't even know it's on my hip it's so light. Now, I know there is one heck of a difference between the recoil of the 357 and the 44...but I'm just pointing this out as an option.

I practice with my 357 all the time. It's recoil is no where near the 44 magnum, so I don't find it hard to shoot at all.

29 3", super accurate, can do 1.5" groups at 25 yards.

629 3", super accurate, can do 4" groups at 100 yards when I am up to it.

I need to get me a 329 i had a 396 and didnt care for it but miss the light weight. You can stick one right in your jacket pocket and hardly know its there

night guard and another.......alaskan back packer??

they have stainless cylenders rather than titanium

adds about 3 0zs and cuts $100

heard [but don't know] they shoot better

thats the one id buy. I had to much trouble with warmer loads sticking in the titanium cylinders of my 396 they would expand to much when shot and they squeaze back down on the brass and make it very hard to eject.

That is one fine lookin gun you picked up!! Let us know how it shoots.

BTW, here is my "deer" M-29 PC gun. I love the way this one fits my hand and shoots.

I picked up the 29-2 yesterday Nice Gun. I used some snap caps and the trigger is great in DA and SA.
