Been looking at the new Katahdin 444 Marlin barrel for my Encore.Anyone shooting one ? How do you like it ? How well does it shoot ?If I get one I will have the M/T cut off and use it as a pistol I just don't like muzzle tamers.

Hey,

I bought a 444 Marlin pistol barrel (15 incher) w/out a muzzletamer. I simply couldn't shoot this thing in anything closely resembling accurate because of the recoil.

I ended up paying about $100 for a High-Tech muzzlebrake. Now it's very shootable and accurate. I even get considerably more velocity than my 444P Guide Gun, using the identical ammo. Because of the muzzle blast of that brake (any brake) I doubt I'll ever be field hunting with that barrel.

I have a 15" 444 barrel and I don't find it too difficult to shoot at all. It has plenty of recoil all right but not as bad as my 450 barrel. By the way my 450 barrel is a custom shop full bull 18" that I set up as a pistol. Recently I set it up as a carbine that is pretty close to the same thing as the Katahdin setup. This thing was bruital. I'll keep it as a pistol, much easier to shoot and I can hit with it alot better. If you want it as a pistol, why not just buy it that way? After cutting off the MT your going to be around 16" anyway. KN

Buy it and leave the brake on it. It is blast to shoot!!! I will hunt with it. For me, the blast is tolerable in the woods in a hunting situation. I know guns make a lot of noise but I never here the gun go bang when among the trees.! The range is another story. It will chase people away, at least from near your bench. I have not chrony's mine yet, but I will. Heavy bullets and 4198 are extremely accurate. I have a Bushnell Trophy on mine. I thought it be a good one to test for durability. 200 thru it so far. with the dot, 2" groups are easy, most are better, but it is a big bore. No problems. I have the same set-up on my 45-70 bbl. I now believe it is a hot set-tp for woods hunting, but the long barrel can be a little slow on target. We'll see.

Hey PJ,

My muzzle brake will unscrew from the barrel. Interested in a trade of some sort? My 15 inch 444 barrel (blue finish) has about 50 rounds through it right now. I'd be interested in any boomer caliber (450 Marlin, 444, 45-70, 500 S&W, 454 Casul) in a carbine length, say 18+ inches. I'd swap you straight up for a bullberry, VV, etc. barrel in like new condition. This could be a great deal, given the extra cost ($100) of my muzzlebrake.
