No serial number
«
on:

I have a receiver that has no serial number. I have examined it to see if it was filed off and it wasnt. I contacted NEF and they said all receivers had serial numbers. If I am not mistaken it is a violation of the law to have a gun without a serial number...
Any help?

According to the FAQ, serial numbers started in 1940, before that, I don't think they had em. I have an old H&R 12ga with the side swing lever that has no serial number, it was made in the '20s from what my Dad and Grandfather have told me.

This according to NEF does not exist. I called today and they said there is no way.

Did you get the name of the person you talked to? Wouldn't be the first time we got bad info from them, not everyone that works there is as knowledgeable as others like Jenn, John and Gordon. There was someone else that recently posted pics of their frame that had no serial number, so I know yours and mine aren't the only ones!

Are you sure the receiver is marked as New England Firearms? NEF might be right that all their receivers have serial numbers. But several of th older H&R firearms had their serial numbers on the barrel on out-of-sight locations. So, when the barrels were removed, the receivers would show no serial numbers. I have two Model 158 (discontinued 1985) rifles which have their serial numbers located so.
