Rebarrel Ruger #1

I was curious what is involved in rebarreling a Ruger #1. While not a gunsmith I am roughly familiar with the rebarrel procedure on a bolt gun including some of the common procedures to blueprint the action.

I see many barrel makers and gunsmiths that offer rebarrel services to not work on single shots or if they do there is typically an upcharge. Can anyone please outline the steps?

Re-barrelling a Ruger Number One or a Number Three is a little more involved than re-barreling a mauser bolt action.

The barrel mounted rib is removed on a Number One.

A special collet-type barrel wrench is needed to remove/install the barrel.  The collet wrench is needed to get around the forearm hanger because it interferes with a regular barrel vise.  Many shops are not equiped to do this, and will charge extra to purchase the special tools.

Except for the special collet wrench, fitting, threading, and headspacing are done exactly the same as on Mauser bolt actions.

I believe there needs to be a notch for the extractor added to the new barrel as well

Used to use a homemade steel backer block set with ood liners and a hydralic press to clamp barrels. It was fairly simple to allow a clearance cut in the wood liners for the forearm hanger.. Had to be careful that it didn't slip but resin and a hydralic press makes huge difference. Many barrels require an extractor cut.. I've made some by hand..
