.454" bullets
« on: November 02, 2006, 02:28:29 PM »
Hello to all. Hope everyone's doin OK. It's been quite a while since I asked a question on this forum. Anyway, I have an ASM mfg'd  EMF Hartford SAA replica, which has .454" grooves in the barrel, & .454" throats in the chambers. I was wondering if anyone knows of a commercial caster who might offer a bullet, whether roundnose or SWC,  in the original diameter, to see if they would improve the accuracy any, as I've read that .45 Colt guns with tight barrels shoot better with .454" bullets, which has proven out on my .45 Colt rifles & a USFA SAA I have. Thanx for your feedback, JD45
P.S. I recently bought some Remington .45 Colt bullets from Midway, advertized to be .455", but after miking several, I found them to be only .453".
P.P.S.....I don't have the inclination to cast my own, thanx.

You might try Penn Bullet - I think they could custom size to 0.454.

Thanx, GSmiley, I'll try Penn bullets, but my 1st post was for .456" bullets..............I don't know how it got changerd to .454" bullets. I said I had an ASM mfg'd SAA replica with .454" barrel & .454" throats, & was wondering who might offer .456" bullets so I might see if they might be more accurate than .454" bullets out my barrel. I appreciate the reply, JD45

Have you slugged the bore of your gun? Most all new made 45 revolvers are now made with 451/452 bores. I don't beleve any of the bullet makers make the old 454 bullets anymore.

Yes Chip, I did slug the bore & chamber throats, coming up with the .454" diameter in both. I think this replica was made on the pre-WWII pattern, which accounts for the .454". BTW, many bullet makers will give you .454" bullets, if you ask for them. What I'm looking for is .456" (the original .45 Colt bullet diameter). JD45
