Another crazy idea ?
« on: November 19, 2006, 06:30:33 AM »
This subject has probably been discussed here before, if so please direct me there. Been thinking about installing a rifle barrel insert in an old double shotgun barrel. Would like a small caliber like a 22 hornet or 32/20. I understand the receivers on old doubles may not be able to take a lot of pressure. Has any one had experience doing this or general opinions of the idea ?

Sounds like an interesting idea.  Would you be converting to a 'double rifle' using both barrels as rifles or a combo gun with a rifle barrel and a shotgun barrel.  I can't see it being too difficult to drop a sleeve down the barrel.  They make 'sub gauge' tubes for them, why not rifle tubes?

What I have in mind is a combo gun maybe a 20/22hornet or 16/32-20. No real purpose in mind just thought it would be neat to do with an old double hammer gun. Do'nt know if it would be best to turn a blank down to fit the bore exactly or slim it down through the mid section and have the chamber and muzzle ends fitted to save weight. Have a few ideas but any others would be appreciated.

Look up MCA Sports - they make chamber adapters and chambered barrels for shotguns.  I have a side by side 20 ga Coach Gun that I have been thinking about getting some inserts or chambered barrels for.  Just have to get myself to do it.  HTH.  Mikey.

You'd have to alter the firing pin diameter also. While these are fairly low pressure rounds they generate roughly 2-3 times the pressure of a shotshell. A lot depends on the shotgun you start with but old hammer doubles for the most part are not really safe even with shotshells let alone higher pressure rounds. They would likely hold for a while but rapidly come 'off the face' and get dangerous.. more modern doubles may work and I've seen some work done with Ruger redlabel overunders and fairly interesting calibers..
