almost a buffalo classic
« on: November 21, 2006, 01:27:11 PM »
I was planning on getting another 45-70 even though I already have a handi rifle....I think it was the 3rd or 4th gun I ever bought and I still love it (it is my first go to gun for deer season still) and I was planning to order either a buffalo classic barrel or the whole rifle......but then, I walked into my favorite local gun shop and spied one of those navy arms lee enfield conversion 45-70 rifles......450 bucks....a bit more than a buffalo classic....but the what the heck, put it on lay away!!!!.......still, collection won't be complete without the bufffalo classic still, so, if the winter is kind, will order that this spring....god, this is a sickness!!!!

I have a question.  I like the furniture that comes on the BC but wondered if the barrel channel was way over sized for a regular handi barrel. Does it look ok? Thank, Gary

Is that one of those SMLE conversions? If so, I shot one once with a hot load and it kicked like an S.O.B.! They're hard to find......sounds like you got a pretty good deal on it.

Gary, all H&R barrels cept the superlights, are pretty much the same size at the forend, the standard contour just has more taper toward the muzzle than the more straight BC/Target and bull barrels. All forends are the same exept those for the 10gr and 12ga slug guns. The .45-70 Handi below has a BC forend on it, fits fine with no mods unless you want to float it, then they all need some sanding.

Andrew, if you want a BC next spring, I suggest you order it now, then you might just have it by then, a 6 month wait isn't unusual. ;)

I have a .45-70 Handi and a BC stock set.  I've been a little reluctant to combine them because of the recoil.  I wish I coud get someone to do a real professional recoil pad and sling swivel installation on the BC stock set.

....the navy arms rifle is indeed one of the lee enfield conversions....I saw one at the last gun show, some guy was carrying it around looking to sell it and once a dealer snapped it up he quickly added 100-bucks to the price....it had a black synthetic stock ....the one i just bought has a nice synthetic monte carlo stock that looks like wood, and it has a sling, the nice micrometer sights and nice receiver....otherewise i wouldn't have coughed up the high asking price.......still plan to get a buffalo classic.....read somewhere that nef is skimping on production of 45-70 barrels of all descriptions to focus on other line items.....still, there was one at the last show or two the dealer wanted 400 but offered it for 375......not bad....but it still hurts for a single shot.....nonetheless, it is so darned "cool" i still gotta have one....I remember the first time I saw one in a gun shop in Brewer Maine about 10 years ago I couln't bellieve what I was handling......wish I had snagged it then, the fit an finish was superb......and yes, I am a sick man.....so many guns so little income, it is all making me sick, sick i tell you!
