rebarell 270 win to 375 ruger?

  i had mentioned on another forum that i wanted to re barrel my ruger mkII ss lh  i realize that the 257 wby would a lot more work than i want to get into just looking for something that is as close to a simple rebarrel as possible  with all the info  i have read about the 375 ruger sounds as though it would be a lot easyer then the latter since it seems to be a standerd action round any input appreciated, thanx superdown

Right now there really isn't enough hard data on the .375 Ruger to be sure just what it is gonna be. It looks to me like either the old .284 Winchester elongated to 2.5" or maybe the European version of same case. If the .284 Win. case then it "might" have the same rim diameter as the .270 but the fatter case would require the smith to know how to deal with that. If it's the European case then the rim is gonna be much larger and would require the bolt face to be opened.

For a comparison look at the .376 Styer that Hornady already loads. I think the new Ruger round is this same round but with the 2.5" case rather than the shorter one it has now. I cannot be 100% sure of this but I'm betting it's just a longer version of what they already load.

My readings all say the rim dia is the same as the 300WM or 338 WM, both are larger than the 270.  You'd most likely have to either modify or replace the magazine and follower assy as well.

From my research on the case dimensions of the Ruger, the case will have the same rim diameter of .532 as a standard belted magnum case.  The base diameter of the bottleneck design in also .532 and does not have the belt.  It should be a good performer equal to the .375 H & H or slightly better.  The advantage of the Ruger is the shorter case can be chambered in actions not designed for 2.850" cartridges.  However, I would not use the .270 and rebarrel.  It would be almost as cheap to buy a 7mm mag or 300 Win mag and rebarrel.  The .270 would need bolt face alteration and magazine follower changed.  Rather that do the gunsmithing on the .270, keep it, rebarrel a used 7 mm mag to .375 Ruger and now you are ready for all game in North America.  You could use the same 2 firearms with success in Africa on picked game and shots with the proper bullets and loads.  Think about it.
