G21
« on: January 02, 2007, 11:10:24 AM »
been looking for a Glock and i was going from a 9mm model 17 to a 45acp model 21. but since i reload for 45acp and always liked ay i have a 45, i just started looking for a 21. well real late last night on G.B. i found one!! and the seller lived right near by me in the same state!! like new older model 21 (no finger groves) in factory case, with 2-13 rounders, 3.5 disconnect all ready done and the factory barrel and a stainless barrel from KKM. for 4 bills.  i was thinking about a plug and maybe extended mag release? now to make lots and lots of 45acp ammo!!! to the range after the 7 day wait is up! Maryland still has it??? the seller and myself just took her into a MD state police barracks and all the paperwork is done now and no FFL to deal with.

Price sounds ok to me with the extra barrel! Be sure to use the KKM barrel for shooting your lead reloads. Be sure to postsize or use the Lee Factory Crimp Die on your final load station.  I carry a Glock 21 as a duty weapon. It's hard to beat in that application. I think you'll find the 21 to be a soft shooting .45. Way too big for me to conceal, but I have plenty of others for that. Get the 17 as well for some inexpensive factory ammo fun.
Enjoy!

tigmaned,

You may be able to get by without the extra step of final crimping or postsizing. Your ammo MAY work just fine in the 21. The die set you have is a good one, and does the job it's intended to do. What post sizing does for you is to eliminate and case bulging you may get in the bullet seating process. Using the Lee Factory Crimp die does the same thing. In tight chambers or pistols with a sharp angle on the feed ramp, this operation makes all the difference! If you have an extra carbide sizing die, just remove the depriming punch and use it as your finish die. If not, the LFCD is about $20. It's cheap insurance to insure your reloads will chamber properly in any pistol you may choose to fire them in. I use one or the other dies in all the calibers I load for. Enjoy your 21!!!

is it worth changeing out the factory plastic recoil spring rod to metal one, or getting what i have seen a metal rod that  inserts into the plastic rod?
its easy to see the lower grip plugs are just more for a finished look, or can dirt really get up there and cause a problem?
i guess what i am asking what changes are more hype then good for the use of the gun?

I usually replace the stock guide rod with a stainless one. Just a matter of preference. The grip plug is as you say, for a more finished look and serves no real purpose. Without the plug you can grab the magazine with your thumb and forefinger to manuall strip the magazine if it doesn't drop free. Kinda a matter of preferemce.

I've carried a 21 for about 13 years now. Haven't done anything but shoot it, shoot it, shoot it. The only option I have really considered is night sights. Great gun. (It's my wife's favorite, too.)

well i picked up my G21 from the seller tonight!! man i can't wait for the weekend to get to the range!! i took my dial calipers and the grip frame is still just a hair skinner and thinner then my Beretta 92D. can't see why everyone complains about the grip size?? i don't have great big hands and the trigger and my finger pad are in the right place.

tigmaned,
Your load sounds very close to my IDPA load. I load the lead 200grSWC over 4.2grs of Bullseye. It works well in all my .45s. Some guns have feeding problems with the shorter 185 SWC in .45. You'll just have to give it a try. No good reason to go over 4.5grs Bullseye with any .45ACP bullet. Let us know how it works out!

tigmaned; This may sound silly--it did to me, but I tried it, and it works. One of our local law enforcement agancies used G21s as their standard issue gun. They put Hogue slip on grips on them, and although it makes the grip just slightly larger, it iseasier to hold and handle. Like I mentioned earlier, it's my wife's favorite gun to shoot. She is just an average sized 5'5" female, and her hands are not large at all. However, she loves the G21 and has no trouble shooting it whatsoever. The slip on grips are pretty cheap, so if you don't like them, you're not out anything, but be sure to try them.

Sounds like a good price on the guide rod. I use a captured spring guide rod for the ease of assembly. Using an allen wrench it's pretty easy to change the springs when needed. I'm not big on the slip on grips, but they might work for you. Doesn't cost a lot to try them. I've had my 21 for about 6 years. Mine came with the finger grooves, which I hated. I promply had them removed and the excess material blended into the grooves. I then had the grip stippled with a soldering iron to give it some texture. Very sure grip now. Mine came from a LE supplier, with night sights, which are still really bright (Meprolights). I Always replace the plastic stock Glock sights with steel ones. The plastics are too fragile for my use. The only other modification I made was to change the stock striker spring to a 6.5# to help insure ignition should I run into hard primers. The heaver striker spring also gives me a little cleaner trigger break, although a little heaver pull than stock. My 36 is basicly stock othet than the night sights and a little internal polishing. My 17 is my SSP gun in IDPA, it has a lot of internal parts changes and polish. Of course the sights have been changed as well.Guess that's the fun of Glocks and 1911s, easy to work on, and lots of aftermarket parts available. It's fun to work with the internals to get the pull abd reset just the way you want it and tailor the springs for your favorite load :)

Oooooops! Forgot the extended maq release on the 21.

mine is a early frame with out any finger groves, but why don't you like them? seems like thats the way all the after market grips are going?
to me the plastic guide rod just dosen't seem right the way you can wiggle it when the slide is back! so i will be changeing that out asap.

tigmaned,
The finger grooves on the 21 just don't fit my hand. They force me to take an unnatural grip on the gun. Don't care for the rubber slip-ons either. The tacky surface makes it difficult to shift your grip if your grip is a little off coming out of the holster, or when doing tac or speed reloads. Just my preference.

took her to the range on Saturday. i like it !!!!! i see what Glock people mean about the less recoil in a 45acp then say a 1911 style 45acp.
the KKM barrel shoots great too!
happy glock guy now!
