In search of a quality Kimber 22 Classic
« on: April 20, 2003, 01:47:15 AM »
Well guys after lots of looking and saving up the cash I was ready to go get a Kimber .22lr rifle. Well that has changed! I am 4 for 4 on pos poor quality control rifles. The first one had a poorly blued bolt and loose grip cap. The second one had junk in the finish of the stock. The third one had a loose grip cap and the bolt was not completely blued also the back of the r eciever had been poorly blued. Then the last one came in with a bolt catch that would not keep the bolt in the gun. I think that I am giving up. I am also considering calling Kimber on Monday and asking them how they can justify a $1000 price tag on a Classic with these kinda problems. They should fire their QA people! I have been hearing about their spotty quality lately and know I have witnessed it too.

God I am bummed out. I have been working all this over time to get a nice rifle and I can't seem to find a good one.... :(

I bought an HS model about three months ago at a gunshow.Somehow I didn't notice til I got home that the clip was missing.I called Kimber, they shipped me one, and the only way to get it to positively lock in place, is to have the bolt open. If it's closed, when you open it to chamber a round, the clip falls out.I mounted a Nikon 6.5x20 on it and It shot 4in-5in. groups with eley/remington matchextra(The same ammo they used at the factory to supposedly shoot a .373 group on my test target).I switched scopes, same thing.Called Kimber they said to send it back.So after paying $750.00 for a .22, I then had to shell out $20.00 and drive an hour to the regional UPS center to ship it back.I asked them, while it was there, and for my time and trouble,to fix a blemish in the finish.I called after 1 1/2-2 wks, to check on the progress, and was told that they had never received it, and hadn't had an HS in the shop since december.I gave the man my tracking number, and he looked it up on the UPS web site, and told me that it had been delivered to them. But they had no record of it anywhere. He promised to call me back in "a few minutes" and let me know what he found out. After 2 hours, and alot of worry, I called back, and talked to a women, who knew nothing of my earlier phone call, or even who I talked too.She said it was being worked on as we spoke.
I received it back 4-5 days later. The invoice said Rebarrelled due to poor accuracy. It shoots VERY good groups now, and came with a new test target showing a five shot .270 group. They didn't fix the blemish, refund my shipping costs, or explain to me how they shot an original test target of .373 if the barrel was bad. It would only make sense if it was a stock or action problem
I have 2 older Kimber of Oregon, 82's, and they are two of the nicest rimfires I ever handled or shot.I'm going to keep my HS because, it's shooting good now, but I will never buy another Kimber of America product.I wish I would have spent another $200.00 and bought a Cooper.
I can't believe either, that they can keep selling guns in this price range with such poor quality control and customer service. It's truly a shame that they're an American company. They ought to move production to China, so we wouldn't expect any better than crap like this going on.
I posted on Rimfire central and there has been at least 5 or 6 other people with the same accuracy problems from brand new Kimbers.I'm sure that's just the tip of the Iceberg.
I just hope people don't associate the Kimber of America problems with the Kimber of Oregons. They are very well made guns.I can't say enough good about mine.
It's not how you pick your nose....It's where you put the booger.

Just goes to show that the you get what you pay for spiel does not always mean you get a quality anything!! I sure would not buy one after all you have seen I would look for a different brand. I am guessing you are looking for a "Custom" type bolt 22. To bad the Romanian 22 trainers are so ugly because do they shoot. They are very accurate. If you decide that you do not want to go the "rolls royce" route and just want a accurate 22 bolt action you could not go wrong with one of the trainers. With the money saved you could also buy a other gun besides the trainer. ;) Jim
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I have other guns that shoot. I have a 1022 with a Clark barrel that shoots very well. I am just looking for a rifle that has nice wood and shoots too.

Yea there  is nothing like great looking wood to say hey this is something special. Well you could always buy a Romainian trainer for under a 100 bucks and put it into a 500 dollar piece of wood.  :)  :)  :)  :)  :)  :)  :) Jim

Hey Kentdep, the shop that I was at yesterday has a kimber 22 on the used rack. And if I recall, it was marked kimber of Oregon on the barrel. Seemed to be in very good condition. If interested I'll send the name and ph # for the shop.

To take this thing in a different direction...

If you are looking for a well-made American rifle, check out www.eabco.com  Eben is currently building a mod 97d rifle for me with every option including the gold-plated trigger.  I picked the woodwork myself while at a gunshow.  Accuracy is guaranteed, and I've found the Browns to be wonderful people to deal with.
It is a single shot however...
Just my Awf Hand comments...
