I took my 30-06 to Wisconsin to go deer hunting. I was in a unit where you have to "earn a buck" meaning you legally have to take a doe before you can take a buck. Well, I was shooting 150gr soft point core loks out of my 26" sst encore and they did the trick.
The doe was a perfect broadside shot. I aimed just behind the shoulder and she dropped right there. She had her head up for a second, looked around and laid her head down.
The buck was quartering away. I hit him through the right front shoulder and it exited out the front of his chest. The bullet nicked the heart and vaporized the lungs. He ran about 40 yards and then he dropped.
I looked but couldn't recover either of the two bullets. Neither shot left me much of a blood trail to follow so that was a little bit disapointing, but then again I did my part with the rifle and didn't need a blood trail because they dropped in my sight. The doe was my first deer and the buck was my first buck ever. I have always passed on deer in the past and let them walk, but it's a lot more fun to hunt when you actually get something.
The pictures are too large or I would post them.
