Sleep apnea and out in the woods question
« on: November 26, 2006, 03:55:54 PM »
Hi everyone
I want to put a question to all you who use a C-pap machine. How do you run your C-pap machine at night while on your hunting trip? The reason I ask is because I need to find a way use mine for next year while out in the woods if I want to sleep. I need power to run it. We will be out about one week. I was thinking between a 12 volt deep cycle battery or gas power generator. I had a near death experience once and my wife woke me up and saved my life. I was gasping for air and was starting to black out. That’s when I got a sleep study done and found out I had Sleep apnea. My machine is set to 16. Anyone else have this problem? What do you use out in the field?

Thanks

Little Joe

I have apnea and have a CPAP, two in fact but just cannot seem to adapt to them so I don't use them. I also get precious little sleep and am tired all the time plus have to take short naps often.

I don't really have an answer for your question directly but I do know that JD Jones of SSK Industries suffers from apnea as we do and JD does use his CPAP and takes it with him on all his trips and hunts all over the world. So obviously he has this figured out. I'll bet if you contacted him he'd take the time to discuss it with you. JD's a nice guy even if some folks don't think so. I'm sure he'd be able to help you with the how to of using it in such places cuz he goes on hunts all over and in our previous conversations he did mention he takes it with him and uses it.

I use a deep cycle battery and a Coleman 500 watt converter for my machine when I camp in state parks with no hook ups. Mostly in the Cades Cove campground in Tennesse.  The converter set up will last me one night.  I use a generator to recharge my battery.  I'm scared to hook it up to the generator at night and leave it running.  I read too many horror stories about people dying from carbon monoxide.  In short it can be done.  What ever you do don't go without the machine.  We owe it to our families to live as long as we can.  Sleep apnea is nothing to play around with. It took me a long time before I got use to the mask.  You have to find a mask that fits you or it will be hard to fall asleep.  Now, I can sleep without it.  I use to snore so loud that my wife couldn't sleep with me.  I'd wake people up in other rooms.  I had no idea until my wife recorded me one night.  I finally broke down and had the sleep study done as well.   You are not alone with this problem and I and others will help you as much as we can.  Good Luck

I too had Sleep Apnea. I had the surgery done and it corrected some of the problem. I do not have enough occurences anymore to use a CPAP. I never could get used to the mask. They tell me there are better designs now so if I ever need one I will be sure to check in to that. If you are supposed to wear it find a way or you just might wake up dead.

I thank you all for the responses.
I will try and contact JD at SSK. I just may have to buy a generator and deep cycle battery.
