Rossi single shot in 7.62x39 vs NEF in same caliber
« on: December 18, 2006, 09:00:46 PM »
Hi guys,
I've been hanging around the H&R NEF forum for awhile and have come across some experiences regarding the Handi rifle in 7.62x39 having problems with ammo, milsurp especially. Apparantly the primers on this ammo are extra hard in order to prevent slam-fires in auto and semi-auto firearms. This results in regular failures to fire in the Handi because the firing pin strike is not strong enough to set the little darlings off.

I am wondering if this is also the case with the single shot Rossi? Anybody have one in this caliber and is willing to comment?

By the way, I don't want this to turn into a discussion about which type of rifle is better, I am a happy owner of both, and don't think the subject needs to be beaten to death (again) - just specifically curious about the performance of the Rossi in 7.63x39.

Cheers
Kerry

Since nobody is responding to your post I'll throw something at you. I don't own the 7.62 Rossi but I have a .22 and the firing pin hits the hardest of any of my rifles. The pin completely crushes the rimfire rounds and when I use snap caps in it the rims are smashed and turned inside out. I don't know if this info will help you or not.

bsbowies, thanks for the reply. I have heard that Rossi has a very strong hammer hit, and probably will handle the 7.62x39 milsurp. I actually got a bit of info from guys on the NEF/H&R forum where I also posted the question.

Seems like hardly anyone has actually used this caliber Rossi.

Cheers

;D Hello, tallyho, I was wanting a NEF in 7.62x39 but could not find one locally, however I found a Rossi and @ $201.00 wasn't all that bad. I have shot several brands (pmc, wolf, remington) of factory ammo thru it. Out of all brands the wolf had the only misfires (1 out of 2 or 3 shots) failed to go off. I think due to the harder or thicker primers and I noticed that the primer faces are .015-.020 below flush of the rear of the cases. The other brands of ammo didnot group well 3"-4" groups @100yrds I wasn't to fond of this, so I bought some brass and handloaded some up. I loaded for deer hunting a 123grn SP hornady @ 2300 fps, I haven't shot very many of these but they are averaging right at an 1" group @ 100yds. By the way I have a 3x9 Nikon Prostaff scope on it.  I still have yet to fine tune the trigger and other mods. Hope this has helped....... P.S. Remington shows a SPR-18 in 7.62x39 might check it out!!!!!!!!!!!! HAPPY SHOOTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Huntsman, thanks for the info. Is the bore .311 or .308 - just curious?

Interestingly I just got the info about the Remington via the NEF/H&R forum too, but I am not in the financial position to buy a new gun at the moment. I was trying to haggle with a guy who had a Rossi, but he wasn't interested. If I could have gotten it at a very good price, I would have done it, but am not so interested that I'd spend about $250 (including FFL and shipping) for it. I have a NEF in 223 at the moment, and have been thinking about sending it off to get a 30/30 and/or .357 mag barrel. I'd rather put the $$ into that right now.

Anyway, thanks for the info. I appreciate you passing it along.

Cheers
