Found 2 huntsmans
« on: January 11, 2007, 10:08:13 AM »
I was in a local hardware store today.  They had two huntsmans.  I bought both of them,  one for me and one for a friend of mine.  What kind of bullets and powders are performing best in these guns?  Im new to muzzel loaders and info will be greatly appreciated.

Couple of things:  First the ramrod is pretty flimsy so when seating a bullet leave the rod in the compressed mode until the bullet is part way down the barrel then extend the rod and finish the seating. You may want to check with Hubbardoutdoors.com for a replacement rod that is much stronger and has the correct threads and relief for pointed bullets. It also is two inches longer when extended.  Not sure who was the designer of the ramrod but he definately was under the influence of some mind bending drug. Next the rifle will shoot just about any bullet you decide to try. Personally I would try Pyrodex and any available sabot bullet combination just to get started. Synthetics like Tripple Seven, American Pioneer and Black Mag'3 are much cleaner but more expensive and some are difficult to find. If you are going to scope the rifle be sure to get the scope base from H&R as some that claim to fit will not have sufficient slots cut at the rear for the scope to mount correctly. Only the one from H&R works well. It also comes with the hammer extension that you will need if you mount a scope. You have a great rifle and I think you will come to believe it after you shoot it some. By the way, the Huntsman has been discontinued so you got one at a good time as lots of people are looking for them. Hope you got a good price.

My best is 295 hollow Powerbelt, over 90 gr 777 powder. Ramrod is not an issue with this load...

I'm the friend he picked the other one up for. We paid $174.00 each. Is that a pretty good price? I knew they were discontinued. He called me and told me about it and I said buy'em both! ;D

That's pretty much the going rate for the blued version.

I have the blued version, I like it.  It is not the only muzzleloader I have owned, plus, I have shot many muzzleloaders that friends of mine have brought to the range.  You will like it.
