Federal Fusion Feedback
« on: December 13, 2006, 05:22:03 AM »
I recently bought a couple of boxes of Fusion in 357 Mag, to hunt whitetails and wild hogs with at close range, I will probably shoot them with my Marlin 1894 Cowboy Rifle, does anyone have any experiences with hunting deer with this round? How did it perform?

I used it in my .357 hartford this year with mixed results. I didnt like the penetration, never had a passthrough, also it put a hole in em about the size of a fist, its almost like it exploded on contact.
I dont know if it would be that good on hogs, never hunted em, just seems like you'd need a heavy hardcast bullet with lots of penetration.

Jury is still out for me, i find jsp is better so far. I have had very poor luck with hollow points.

good luck.

On Friday Nov. 3, I took a button buck with a 4" 357 mag, a Taurus Tracker using 158 gr. Federal Fusion ammo. The 357 worked fine. The deer was coming right at me and I pulled the trigger at about 25 yards. The bullet entered the chest and came out it's right front leg. The deer dropped right there. If you keep your ranges reasonable and put the bullet where it needs to go you should be fine.  Also, this year I am using 180 grain Federal Fusion in my 308. My rifle likes them better than the 150 grain ammo (both Fusion and Winchester ballistic silver tips). I have taking two deer with this round. I also hunt heavy woods. I took a nice spiked at about 125 yards shooting thru some pines. This deer was shot thru both lungs just behind the shoulder blades, I had an excellent blood trail for 15 yards where I found the deer laying. The second deer, a 170 lbs. 7 point, was shot up close at about 20 yards. The bullet was shot down into the shoulder blades, this deer went all of 10 yards were it fell.  ;)
