Saving the jaws can be a bit tricky , most smaller sharks have a very week jaw once removed from the skull. What we do is cut around the head , DO NOT CUT THE STOMACH OPEN . Once the head is removed and all the skin cut off , bury the head near an ant mound . The ants will remove all the leftovers making it easy to clean up. Some people boil the head , I have found this made it easier to break the jaw. If it is a small shark , check your local laws and make sure it is big enough befor whacking him in the head. I use a small bat or ball pin hammer to do the do , if you got a good knife , just cut off the head and bag it on ice. I have a gaff hook that I use to land them , you can get one at your tackle shop as well. Use lots of caution as they are just as aagressive on land as they are in water. When you think he is dead , whack him a few more times. I generally try to work from behind , if it's a small shark sit on him like you would a gator. Stay clear of the mouth until you are bagging it , teeth are sharp dead or alive. Once you have the jaw out , it will probably break near the hinge point. Not to worry , some kite string and epoxy will fix it . Others wrap it in wire , it is common for them to break on a smaller shark. I measure using my fishing pole , I have some bright colored tape at 1' intervals for this use. My other rods have tapes on them that will also find in your tackle shop , go check out some local pawn shops and see what you can find there. You will save a few $$ and get a few more items for it as well .
