500 S&W on game ?
« on: November 20, 2006, 06:06:35 PM »
Has anyone taken any game animals with this round. If so what type of animal and what load was used. I'm planning on using it next year on a bear hunt with hornady's factory loaded 350gr xtp.

Big Jake

I took a very nice spring black bear here in Alaska with one of my cast slugs .
It was a 700 Grain WFNGC Vel 1300 at 77 yards .I was able to get the bear to stop and take a look at me .When he stopped he sat down and leaned over to look through some brush and when he did whammy right through the heart .When he was hit he did a back flip and was dead before he even hit the ground .
No recovery of bullet .It was a pass through .
I will try to post a pic .I put one of my loaded 700 Grain slugs beside the entrance hole .The bear is on it's back .......

There's an article in the latest Bear Hunting magazine about a couple of big grizzilies being taken with the S&W 500.

Rick,
Have you loaded any of his 700 gr. bullets? I bought some of his bullets from him this summer when I was in Homer AK. He gave me the data he loads, but it`s pretty hot, even for Ak. and I`m sure to hot for the lower 48. I haven`t started working up a load with any of his bullets yet and won`t hunt with them this year but really want to get a good safe load for those 700 gners.

Catfish, Ranger Rick is the one who casts the 700 gr. T Rex bullets.

I have loaded a bunch of them and they shoot great out of my 4 inch 500 Mag, Boy what a handful.

I cast and reload a 700 gr. bullet for the .500 and it is a handful with a 4" and a hot load.  Slow them down a bit and they are more fun to shoot.  I speed them up only for in a longer barrel.

As far as game.  I've shot everything from gophers to bears in Wyoming with my .500 and it's all good.

MR Catfish
Nice to hear from you again.
I hope your stay in Homer and other areas in Alaska was full of fun and nice people  !!!!
It is always nice to put a name to a face . It was nice meeting you .

Yes you are correct some of the loads are hot . You should have no problem starting on the low end of the data .
I have been working with another bullet since we last met .
It is a 400 Grain Spire point .
I will post a picture .
Have had quite a few people say these are great for deer . I have not taken anything with them yet , still working on developing some good loads .

The 4" and the 700 Grain Thumpers are quite a night show well dusk anyway . The fire ball is something that has to be seen !!!!

I have hunted feral pigs with my 480 ruger Raging Bull and with my S&W 500 both have the 8 3/8 barrel and both are as accurate as I am.  ::) The first one I got was a 150 lb sow with the 480 using a 400 grn sierra soft point with 20 grns h-110 behind it at about 60 yrds open sites, went right through both shoulders and exited the other side (BIG HOLE) pig went down but tried to get back up and was pushing his nose with his back legs when the second round hit him in the head from 25 ft, Man what a mess.
The second one was with the 500 with a 370 grn hard cast with 40.5 grns of h-110 behind it from about 85 yrds with an ultradot on it, the boar was 250 pounds and never saw me, the round hit him low in the shoulder and went straight threw taking his heart and lungs and both legs with it, exited about the same size it went in and I don't think it even slowed down any judging by the size of the hole it blew in the bank behind him, I never did find the bullet I dug probably 20 inches deep but never found it, Anyway, WOW, that 500 puts some serious mustard on that 370 grn. Anyway, thats all I have taken with mine.
