Can I have a matt finished barrel blued?
« on: December 07, 2006, 07:19:27 AM »
I have an 11-87 Premier 20 gauge. I can get a Remington 21 inch fully rifle barrel with the cantilever scope mount (pt#27591). The only this is that this barrel is has the matt finish. I want to know if I can have this barrel blued to match the finish on the rest of the gun?  ;D

I don't see why not.  They will just bead blast or sand blast it then blue it.  The matte finish Remington uses is not that tough to get off.  Heck most of it comes off within a couple of years of use anyway.  I hate the matte finish that Rem uses, it rust like no other.  One thing to think about though is the expense.  It would pay to search the net and find a 21 inch barrel to fit your needs instead of converting.  A good blue job can cost a bunch of money, more than the price of a new barrel.

The short answer is yes.  You might want to consider having the whole thing reblued to be sure it matches.

Thanks guys! The problem is there is no other rifled barrel with the cantilever scope mount for the 11-87 20 gauge. Remington makes a blued 21 inch rifle barrel for it, but it doesn't have the cantilever mount. Last I knew Hastings doesn't make them either. I'll look into that though!  ;D

Called my local Gander Mountain today. I asked their gunsmith if he could blue the matt barrel I can get for my 11-87 20 ga.. He said they would have to polish it then blue it, but it's no big deal. It'll cost about $125 to have done!

The only difference between a matte finish and high polish blue is the amount of polishing done before going in the blue tank. Matte finished guns are bead blasted, then dropped in the tank. High polish blue requires the gun or bbl to look like a mirror before going in the tank. High polish blue costs more because it takes more labor.

John R., so it doesn't sound like it should be a big deal then. Is that correct?
