Wouldn't use a peep on a handgun. The aperture is rather little for that distance from your eye.

I've experimented with the Foolproof and the Guide model sights on Contenders.  It worked ok if you remove the aperture and used it kind of ghost ring type.  The Guide model was very compact and the Foolproof had tons of elevation adjustment.    You can replace the peep with a conventional rear leaf that might be handy for sillywet. I still use them on carbines.
