T/C Pro-Hunter 209x50 Mods
« on: November 22, 2006, 05:01:20 PM »
I just picked up a T/C pro-hunter in 209x50 stainless with thumbhole stuck.  I fitted a Nikon 3x9x50 to it and is ready to go.  a few questions:

Are there any suggested modifications and improvements that people do to improve accuracy on these guns?
What is the choice powder/pellet and bullets for these guns?
I am also looking for some recommendation on how to break in the barrel.

Thanks in advance.
Blessed be the Lord my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight. My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust;

I don't do a barrel break in, and I did not do any modifications to my Pro-hunter. I am getting 1 inch groups at 100 yards with it as is.
The first thing I did was get one of the new Nikon Omega BDC 3X9X40mm a good set of Warne mounts and rings. I then went to the range
and worked up a load that gave me the best overall performance. I ended up with the following load and bullet choice. I am shooting 120 gr. of loose triple 7  and a T/C Bonded Shockwave sabot. I am using Remington Kleenbore primers.
One thing I do to any of my muzzleloader's is, I season the barrels with bore butter. I do put a little on the skirt of the sabot when I am shooting to keep the fouling down in the barrels. When I clean my muzzleloader's, I always run a patch of bore butter down and leave it in the barrel until I shoot again. I have been using bore butter for many many years with great results. I can shoot 10 plus shots without having to clean my barrel and no accuracy issues.

I just ordered a  25 ACP conversion for my Pro-hunter. I am using it in and standard Encore muzzleloader with great results. The reason I want to try it is, I like how big the 25 ACP is and that makes it a lot easier to load and unload the primers. I don't have a crud ring issues with my Pro-hunter and currently my accuracy is great.
That would be the only modification I would make to my Pro-hunter.

Did they finally come up with a breech plug conversion for the pro hunter? Is it the 22 hornet, or the 25 .acp. I know you were looking into this earlier. I have been very happy with the 25 acp conversion on my standard encore. Just curious incase anyone asks me.

I was trying to get David White to do it in 25 ACP, he said he could do it in 22 Hornet only. Well I went to Precision Rifles site and seen they offer it now in the 25 ACP.  I have a bunch of new 25 ACP brass so I ordered it. I am still using the 25 ACP in my standard Encore barrel also.

I added two stainless steel washers on the pillars in the forearm. It kinda floats the barrel, plus it helps to make the screws clear the ram rod. On mine if I tightened the screws, the ram rod wouldn't clear them. I think one of them(the screws are a little longer than the other one.) The synthetic fore arm still touches the barrel, but you can slide a dollar bill down it's length now. It might give ya a little better group too, sure can't hurt! :)

I do a trigger job and buy a oversized pin for all of mine. I keep a stock of springs and pins and this occurs before they ever fire a shot. I have never found a factory trigger on an Encore that I liked. And in most cases the hinge pine is not large enough to create the fit I want.  The forearm is on an as needed basis. I have also seen the QLA cause problems. I am lucky to have a first rate shop at my disposal. If the QLA is not cut perfectly it will hurt performance. One of the worst grouping Encores I have seen turned out to be the best shoting gun I have after the QLA was re-cut.

The QLA is a short section at the end of the barrel that does not have any rifling in it.

It helps get the bullet lined up with the bore when reloading!

With it, you don't need a bullet starter for reloading!  You can start the bullet/sabot with your fingers!

Some like it and some don't!
A lot of the ones that don't, have it removed by shortening the barrel!
