who made this one?
« on: September 11, 2006, 09:31:58 PM »
My grandfather left me a Harrison Special damascus double. barrel length is 30 in. with 2- 3/4 chamber? does anyone know who produced these. I've been told it was baker, but I think it was h&r or coswell-harrison in england. The gun is in great shape, and i have been told to not be afraid to shoot low brass through it. I think thats bad advice, but it really is a pretty gun.

You should NOT shoot a damascus-barreled gun, even with black powder shells.

When a damascus barrel is made, it consists of several "bands" of steel which are pounded around a mandrel, then welded together, then re-shaped and polished smooth again.  Unfortunately, within the barrel bands themselves, oxygen is trapped as the welding takes place and, eventually, especially with a strain inside the barrel like a shell being fired, the barrel tends to break or split open under pressure where the oxygen is/was trapped.

In the old days, you would see men out in public with the first joint or two of the first 3 fingers of their right hands missing where that hand wrapped around and gripped a shotgun barrel.  This was often due to having the barrel or barrels of a damascus-barreled shotgun burst upon being fired... and the man's fingers were blown off.

Oddly enough... a shotgun with a damascus barrel  can fire shell after shell, then... SUDDENLY "let go" and explode... knocking a "chunk" out of the barrel near the chamber.

Just make SURE you are NOT one of the "victims".

thanks for that info ron, because our family still shoots an old twelve with a damascus style barrel, and that will probably be put to a halt after hearing that.

It depends on the quality of the damascus barrels. Good barrelmakers can make fine reliable barrels of twisted steel, but there was also a lot of junk around. The British are still using these guns, but they have to take them to the Proof House for Nitro Proof tests.

It has also been said that investing in a set of full length sub caliber tubes for these guns is a way to keep shooting them.
Just another worthless opinion!!
