J.P. Sauer Combo
« on: December 04, 2006, 01:22:39 PM »
I like my pre-war drilling in 16 X16 X 9.3X72, but I am getting a bit tired of 2 1/2" shells and the limited bullets and loading supplies for the 9.3.

I saw a J.P. Sauer combo in 30.06 X 16ga (2 3/4") for sale and started thinking this might be the ideal all around combo for me.  I love turkey hunting, but the 30.06 can be loaded down or up pretty well.  Anyone have one of these for sale, or can you give me the positives and negatives on this particular combo.

I would also settle for a 30-30 X 16 ga combination, and possibly other ones.  I saw  a Sauer 16 X 8X57 for sale at a very reasonable price, but would rather stick with a good old American cartridge.

I would trade the drilling for the right Sauer combo possibly.

What's wrong with the 8x57???  Mine has worked much better that i expected, and i've taken everything from coyotes to moose and bear with it...  200 NP's have really made it shine!!

I have to admit, i wasn't an 8x57 fan untill i started hunting with one, and then i was amazed how well it performed!

Nothing is wrong with the 8X57; my best friend has a drilling in this caliber.  There's nothing wrong with the 9.3 X 72 either.  I've had good luck reloading it.  I'm just hankering for 2 3/4" 16 gauge chambers and an American cartridge that has more available and varied components for it.  IMHO, the P.J.Sauer in 30.06 X 16ga would have been perfect if only I had acted on it faster.  So, now that I missed the train, I'm trying to find another one.  So, if anyone knows of one for sale, please let me know.

Actually, if I could find a combo with 2 3/4" 16 gauge chambers and a 32-20 rifle caliber I would be in pure hog heaven.

Thanks,
Mike

mbyoh, That would make a great turkey gun. Don't you hunt anything else? And why a 16ga? I like the 16ga too but I guess the 20 ismy favorite.  ;D Regards, Byron

Most drillings are built on two frame sizes...  12 ga. and 16 ga., with the 20 ga. built on the 16 ga. frame....  I've always liked the 16 ga. better because it fits the frame size better.  Also i did grow up with a father that loved his 16 ga. semi auto Rem. shotgun..  (that he gave to me years ago)  At age 93 he still uses it around the farm for pest....

Also you can get factory made adapters to shoot 20 ga. ammo in a 16 ga. chamber.  I have a couple for my Krieghoff that were made from "cut off's" from a Valmet 412 bbl set i shortened...  (see picts.) ... They work pretty good but i've only used them for hand thrown clays and closer shots on rabbits ect....  There's no shortage of 16 ga. ammo, so i must admit i rarely use them.  In fact these days 99% of my hunting with with the rifle bbl...

It seems like in the last 20 + years i just reach for my drilling when i'm going hunting and don't even think about useing something else...  One thing i would like to do to it yet, is get a better "lower light level" scope for it than i now have.  One of these days i'm going make the plunge and sort all of that out.  (read $$$$$$$$$)
